Update on Columbus Sport Hybrid superyacht in build at Palumbo

3 April 2012

Palumbo has released more details about the Columbus Sport Hybrid superyacht, which we reported was ordered by a Russian buyer last year. Originally a 38m yacht, it has now grown to 40m, and is being built alongside another 60m yacht, the Columbus Classic 200, which is in a more advanced state with its hull almost completed.

A love of the sea was the impetus for the design of the Columbus Sport 130 Hybrid, informing both its impact on the marine environment and the way those on board the yacht are able to relate to the sea.

The yacht, which has naval architecture by Hydro Tec, has been designed to have as light an environmental impact as possible. Its hybrid propulsion system enables the yacht to run at a low speed of 7.5 knots on two generators with the main engines turned off, thus reducing NOx and SOx emissions. The electric engines are also quick to respond and thus useful when manoeuvring in port. Virtually silent too, they are ideal for night time navigation. When in use the diesel engines have the ability to generate power, which in turn lowers the maintenance costs and fuel consumption of the diesel generators. Fuel consumption will also be reduced by having a lighter aluminium semi-displacement hull and superstructure.

Aesthetically, the design of the yacht allows expansive views of the sea from out of exceptionally large windows in the main saloon together with sliding windows and doors and opening bulwarks. Spacious and open deck areas include a spectacular flybridge sundeck and beach club at the stern.

Interior volumes are impressive for a yacht of this size, with the layout incorporating accommodation for up to nine guests in an owner's suite and three guest cabins, but areas have been designed to be adaptable in terms of configuration.

Interior designers Hot Lab were selected by the owner to give the yacht a refined, elegant but relaxed style with a soft, warm palette that steers away from harsh contrasts, and light ceilings and walls. Marbles such as Breccia Sarda and Emperador Dark will be complemented by teak, sicomoro wood and grey durmast, and the use of leather, polished stainless steel and fine fabrics will provide textural interest.

Columbus Sport 130 Hybrid, which will be RINA classified in compliance with MCA, is due to be delivered in August 2013.
