Eastern Shipbuilding has proudly launched its new sailing superyacht Columbia in Panama City, Florida.
Launched on 23 August from the builder’s yard, this brand new steel-hulled schooner is a replica of the famous 1923 classic Gloucester fishing schooner Columbia.
The original sailing yacht was built in wood by Arthur Dana Story in Essex, Massachusetts and was designed by renowned designer Starling Burgess. The new and modernised Columbia was built from Burgess’ original line drawings that were adapted for steel construction by Boston-based naval architects Gilbert Associates.
The newly launched expedition sailing yacht is the first of two identical hulls by Eastern Shipbuilding. This classic sailing yacht project was a new challenge for the US shipyard, who are best known for building ferries, tug boats and offshore supply ships.
The brand new Columbia boasts an impressive length on deck of 43 metres and a length at waterline of 33.58 metres.
Columbia is set for sea trailing in September and, should she pass successfully, will be showcased at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show in October.
