The 36.5 metre classic sailing yacht Puritan has been sold with Edmiston acting for both the seller and buyer. Mike Horsley at Edmiston & Company has confirmed the sale of the gaff schooner.

Designed by John G Alden, Puritan was built with a steel hull by US yard the Electric Boat Company of New London, Connecticut, which specialised in the construction of submarines, and delivered in 1931. She has kept the same name since then.

Accommodation is for eight guests in four cabins, including a master suite with a king sized bed and three further doubles; all have king size beds and all with en-suite facilities. Her large saloon has a dining table for 10 guests, comfortable settees and chairs plus ample storage spaces. Furniture throughout is in original or restored Oregon pine wood.

Puritan is one of the most original and carefully restored great sailing yachts of the past. She is also a true bluewater cruiser thanks to her extremely strong and reliable construction and her original design, a testament to Alden’s boat designing abilities.

Puritan has the elegance and charm of many boats of her era and is uncluttered by unnecessary additions or frills.

The 84-year-old Puritan was on the market for a year and was said to have needed some attention to her systems, sails and technical aspects. When constructed in 1931 she carried a small Winton diesel engine for auxiliary power. Her first registered owner was Edward W Brown.

Puritan was lying in Antibes on the Cote d’Azur in the south of France at the time of her sale, and the asking price was €5 million.
