The most interesting dichotomy to emerge from the market in recent months is that between the sales of fast boats and explorer yachts. While racers were proving hard to sell, explorer yachts have dropped relatively little in price and are still being built – although theirs will always be a niche market

A dearth of customers in the preceding three years had withered prices, left shipyards empty and flooded the marketplace with the yachts of nervous owners. September saw reports of new orders outstrip brokerage sales for the first time in two years

While slipping from 30 sales in July to 12 in August may seem a dramatic drop, it follows a pattern – a spring spike and a late-summer slump – that has held for the past three years.

July saw 29 yachts sold, compared to 17 a year ago, an increase of 71%. Amongst them were two of the largest yachts in the world - the 82m Alfa Nero and the 73.3m Silver Zwei, both of which changed hands last month

June saw 34 sales, compared to 21 a year ago, an increase of 62%. Although there were more sales, they were smaller yachts. Indeed only two yachts over 50m were sold compared to 5 in June 2010.

May was a record month on several fronts, with yacht sales passing the €1 billion mark, a month ahead of last year and three months earlier than in 2009.

April saw the momentum developed in March 2011 continue, particularly as it saw the first yacht over 70 metres sold so far this year.

Last month saw the pace set in February continue to speed up, with more yachts sold than in any month since December 2009.
