CHARTER GUIDE
Montenegro (Crna Gora) might easily have been called Turquoise Seas, rather than Black Mountains, and still have a name that is a master of understatement. For Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Marilyn Monroe and James Bond in Casino Royale it was the destination of the moment. Now its time has come again.
Perched precariously where east meets west it has proved to be a prize worth fighting for time and time again. Its gain is a rich cultural heritage that reflects the best of the Venetian, Austrian and other great influences of the past, and a late rediscovery that has allowed it to avoid the ravages of the mass tourism of yesteryear.
Escaping relatively unscathed from the Balkan civil war in the 1990s, and after an amicable separation from Serbia in 2006, the newly independent nation of Montenegro had a blank canvas upon which to shape a future where tourism is clearly important. Mindful of mistakes made elsewhere, conscious of the need to protect its inheritance and blessed with a population that has hospitality in the blood, Montenegro sees high-end tourism and the superyacht industry as a niche to make its own.
However luxurious the venues, the real draw of course is Montenegro itself – the spectacularly beautiful Bay of Kotor, the charming island of Sveti Stefan, stunning coastal towns such as Kotor, Budva and Ulcinj, miles of beaches, crystal clear water, secluded coves, primeval forests, glacial lakes and, of course, the mountains.
