View across Port Denarau Marina to Denarau's majestic scenery beyond

The island paradise of Fiji has long been a well-known destination for those in search of sun and sea in the South Pacific. Famous for its clear waters, soft coral reefs and unspoilt lagoons, the collection of over 300 islands makes perfect material for exploring.

Until now, superyacht owners have chosen to cruise these waters relatively alone, with little infrastructure in place for superyachts and charters. The new Port Denarau Marina, located on the largest of Fiji’s islands, aims to transport Fiji from a subsidiary part of New Zealand or Australia’s cruising grounds into a destination in its own right.

Fiji has some of the world's best cruising waters

Denarau Island is Fiji’s largest integrated resort, comprising of seven high end resorts and an international standard 18 hole golf course, as well as 300 private residences. The island is connected by a causeway to Viti Levu, the largest island, and is 15 minutes’ drive away from Nadi International Airport.

The Marina

Central to Denarau’s development as an exclusive international resort, Port Denarau Marina aims to be a superyacht destination in its own right. Over the last three years considerable modifications have been made to the marina, including the addition of a brand new Bellingham Marine floating jetty for visiting craft.

Aside from top class facilities, Port Denarau uses its location as a hub for ferries and private craft to and from other island resorts to attract visitors. There is also the new Commercial and Retail Centre, the largest such complex in the area, which is home to anything you need from a doctor to a beauty salon, as well as nine restaurants and bars to welcome you after a day’s excursion. The centre also hosts regular entertainment in the form of local cultural events and live bands.

Dockside facilities
Port Denarau Marina boat yard has drystack facilities, with a 35 ton travel lift and a 6 ton marina bull forklift to transport yachts. There is a hardstand area with space for 12 boats with a storage area for up to 30. The storage area is particularly useful to yacht owners during the cyclone season, when it is used to protect vessels, particularly sailing yachts.

There are 16 large workshops, which service the boat yard as well as commercial operators. Services include sail making, chandlery, engineers and yacht services.

Cruising information

Fiji’s location in the tropics means that the yachting season is predominantly confined to the ‘dry’ season between April and November, avoiding the possibility of cyclones.

As part of the strategy to ensure Fiji’s place on the world map of superyacht destinations, 2010 saw the government pass a ‘Super Yacht Decree’. This legislation is designed to facilitate the yacht charter industry and help local businesses. Under the decree, superyachts are free to charter in Fiji for up to a year.
