THE CORUM STORY

Corum and sailing, a story of passion

From their foundation in 1955, Corum displayed a determination to position themselves in the forefront of the Swiss watch industry, and in particular to align themselves with the world of sailing. It didn’t take long to start this process, as in 1960, they named the first in the collection of square water-resistant watches “Admiral’s Cup”. It was even designed with an engraving of a yacht on its caseback, to further reinforce their position in the yachting world.

THE EIGHTIES

Corum took this association with sailing to the next level, when they sponsored the Champagne Mumm Admiral’s Cup. To mark this association with international yachting, Corum presented an Admiral’s Cup watch to each of the winners. In 1985, the relationship was extended, when they sponsored the second inshore regatta of the Admiral’s Cup – and the Corum Trophy was born.

From here, it was an obvious progression for Corum to run their own yacht. Corum I took part in 1987 and Corum II quickly followed in 1989, and launched ahead of the Mumm Admiral’s Cup at Cowes, on the Isle of Wight. The House followed up with successive regatta sponsorships with the Classic Yacht Regatta in America, and the Corum China Sea Race and the Corum Japan Cup in Asia, while also partnering the Kiele Week in Germany and many other world-class competitions.

Sailing can give you a massive adrenalin rush

THE NINETIES
In 1991, Corum entered three yachts in the Admiral’s Cup, with the ‘Corum Sailing Team’ sailing under the colors of the French team. The team topped the rankings, for the first time in the history of French sailing.

The 56th Bol d’Or on Lake Geneva in 1994 remains engraved in living memory due both to its highly difficult sailing conditions, but also due to the Corum boat’s victory. The boat indeed still holds the race record today in the monohull class (Bol d’Or Vermeil).

Sailing back into calmer waters

A NEW MILLENNIUM
In 2007, Corum sponsored the Swedish team, Victory Challenge, participating in the selections for the 32nd America’s Cup in Valencia, Spain, with Magnus Holmberg at the helm.

Corum became the official timekeeper in 2011 for the Banque Populaire Team’s attempt to win the Jules Verne Trophy. This extraordinary challenge, saw the team under the skipper of Loïck Peyron, start their circumnavigation of the globe on November 22nd. And what a trip it was, the team completed the challenge, having smashed the previous record by over 2 days. The Maxi trimaran Banque Populaire V, finished in just 45 days, 13hours, 42 minutes and 53 seconds, achieving an average speed of 26.51 knots and covering over 29,000 miles.

This love affair with sailing continues to go from strength to strength. Arguably the most famous association to date, is with their watch’s name sake – The Admiral’s Cup.
In 2012, Corum are sponsoring the Energy Team AC45, reinforcing its full support of the Peyron brothers. The AC45 is an essential element of the vision to win the 34th America’s Cup, which will feature 72-foot catamarans raced on San Francisco Bay in the Finals in 2013. The America’s Cup has always been a challenge between yacht clubs. Loïck and Bruno Peyron (the only french team to compete for the trophy) will benefit from some prestigious support, as it is the Yacht Club de France, which is taking the Energy Team challenge to the Golden Gate Yacht Club in San Francisco. Loïck will skipper and Bruno will head the design team. Yann Guichard will be secondary helmsman.

Corum and sailing go hand in hand, but it is the memories and heritage associated with each of these exquisite watches that tell a greater story; that of a brand who puts its heart and soul into their creations to ensure they last not just a lifetime, but generations.

THE WATCHES

THE ADMIRAL’S CUP COLLECTION

Corum's Admiral's Cup Legend

The legend 42, one of 5 watches in Corum’s Admiral’s Cup collection

The collection began, with the classic square water-resistant watches, and latterly the addition of the 12 nautical pennants representing the hour-markers, (taken from the International Code of Maritime Signals). There have been several evolutions over the years, most notably watches to include chronographs designed to measure boats’ times in regattas, diving watches for lovers of the deep, as well as the famous tidal watch, the Admiral’s Cup Tides. These watches are all designed to be both esthetically beautiful, but also to perform specific functions in the daily lives of sailors. The Admiral’s Cup collection offers three separate lines: LEGEND with classic and elegant styling, CHALLENGER with a more sporting chic dimension, and SEAFENDER with watches built for extreme conditions.
