As the world grows ever more conscious on man's impact on the environment, the superyacht industry is not immune to this growing trend. Today, owners, designers and yards are making strenuous efforts to make their yachts more eco friendly, whether this means adding solar panels or utilising hybrid power. Here we present five examples of innovative, eco-friendly yachts currently on the sales market.
Oceanstyle by Burgess and Gaspard Yachts are jointly listing the 31.5m superyacht M'Ocean for sale.
M'Ocean was built to RINA class by Italian yard Arcadia Yachts in and delivered in 2012 This tri-deck yacht is based on the successful Arcadia 85 series with designer Francesco Guida applying the same innovative design to this semi-displacement hull built in composite. His design has been guided by eco-friendly principles and features an abundance of natural light and some ingenious technological innovations.
One of most spectacular areas is the upper deck saloon, which has a transparent superstructure allowing natural light to fill the interior, and solar panels that provide enough power to limit the use of generators. The full-beam dining area is ideally located in the middle of the main deck. Retractable balconies on each side enhance the sense of spaciousness and offer fantastic views out to sea.
Her 12 guests are accommodated in a master suite and a VIP stateroom on the upper deck and two double and two twin cabins below, while her 'green' credentials are further enhanced by the use of twin 1,224hp MAN diesel-electric engines.
Located in the Western Mediterranean, M'Ocean is asking 8.9 million.
Fraser Yachts are offering for sale the 59m motor yacht Capella C asking $5.8 million
Capella C was originally built as a pilot vessel by Holland's Scheepsbouwerft Pot yard and delivered in 1968. She was converted into a luxury yacht in 1985 and was last refitted in 2008. Capella C sleeps 22 guests in 12 staterooms with 17 crew and her triple 600hp Deutz diesel-electric engines give her a range of 4,500 nautical miles at 11.5 knots.
Nakhimov Yachts has listed a new 51.5m Admiral Tecmomar hybrid motor yacht concept for sale. Naval architecture is by Vripack with styling by Dobroserdov Design and she will be built in aluminium to RINA class and MCA compliant. Accommodation is for 10 guests in five staterooms and power comes from four 1,800hp MAN engines. Under diesel power she cruises at 12 knots with a maximum speed of 23.4 knots and a range of 3,500 nautical miles. In purely electric mode her maximum speed is 10 knots.
Delivery is anticipated in 2016 and the asking price is 23.5 million.
The CXL 160 is a 48.00m trimaran sailing yacht proposed by Ultraluxum and could be delivered 24 months after contract signature.
The CXL concept is the brainchild of Jean-François Ruchonnet, founding partner of Ultraluxum, and was developed by designer Jean-Jacques Coste of Coste Design & Partners. With a length of 48 metres, the sloop-rigged trimaran would become the largest multihull superyacht in the world.
The concept's main innovation is its folding hull beams, which can reduce its overall width from 23 metres in a sailing configuration to 11 metres in harbour mode, making it the first trimaran able to berth in St Tropez. Her low draft allows anchoring and cruising close to the shore and in shallow waters.
Bureau Veritas classed, the CXL would be built in sandwich epoxy resin and carbon fibre, with an overall weight of 110 tons. She will have a 55 metre mast and a total sail area of 1,200 square metres, giving top speeds of between 20 and 27 knots. Diesel-electric propulsion will be an option, enabling her to reach 15 knots under power, with a 40 per cent reduction in fuel consumption compared to a monohull of the same size. It ensures low emissions.
The modern interior designed by Coste Design & Partners and Ultraluxum's owner Jessica Sbaraglia, and will accommodate six guests in a master suite and two guest cabins, all en suite. Listed for sale by bluewater, she is asking 42 million.
Burgess are listing for sale the 39.5m Columbus 40S Hybrid motor yacht asking 15.5 million.
Built in aluminium by the Italian yard Palumbo, she was launched in early September 2013 and went on to win multiple awards at the 2014 Showboats Design Awards. Naval architecture, exterior styling and lines are by Sergio Cutolo of Hydro Tec, while the interior design is by the yard team in collaboration with Italian studio Hot Lab and the owner.
The master suite is forward on the main deck and features an office, large dressing room, and an en suite with a huge double-head shower. There are two guest cabins and an aft VIP cabin on the lower deck and this can be turned into two cabins by pulling a sliding screen through the middle of the cabin and pulling a bed down from the wall of the cabin's sitting room.
Throughout the yacht the colour palette is neutral, with browns, creams and whites. Fitted with two diesel and two electric engines, the yacht can be operated as a conventional diesel vessel or a hybrid diesel electric one and as a third option can be all-electric power.
Northrop & Johnson and Burgess are jointly listing the 39.2 metre expedition yacht Safira for sale asking $24.95 million.
Built by US superyacht yard Newcastle Marine, Safira is ABS classed and MCA unrestricted with an ice-strengthened hull and was delivered in 2013. The winner of an award for naval architecture at the 2014 ShowBoats Design Awards, she's a global explorer with remarkable engineering, excellent seakeeping qualities and a host of eco-friendly attributes.
For a start, energy-efficient electrical specifications allow smaller generators to be carried, in turn reducing fuel consumption. Even the woodwork and decking is 'green'. In place of teak is an environmentally friendly Dutch product called Esthec, which provides sound insulation to lower decks. Dynamic positioning using GPS enables Safira to stay precisely in place without anchoring, ideal when cruising environmentally delicate areas.
10 guests are accommodated in five staterooms with the full beam master suite located below decks amidships, the position of least movement on board. There are a further two doubles and two twins and all staterooms have en suite bathrooms.
