Sailing superyacht Avalon sold

17 March 2015 • Written by Malcolm MacLean

The 33 metre sailing yacht Avalon, listed for sale by Jonathan Chapman at Northrop & Johnson, has been sold in an in-house deal.

Avalon was built in aluminium by New Zealand yard Southern Pacific Yachts to a design by Ron Holland and was delivered in 1987 as Gleam. In 1992, after cruising around the world, she was extended by six feet and her name was changed from Gleam to Avalon. She also received a totally new interior and has only had two owners until now.

Avalon has gone on to complete two successful tours to the South Pacific, and has become one of the most celebrated Newport and St. Barth’s Bucket race veterans in history. She features generous accommodation for six guests in three cabins, all with en suite bathroom facilities, along with berths for five crew in a traditionally appointed interior and has consistently benefited from thoughtful refits and updates by her owners.

She also has space down below for inside dining, along with a spacious and comfortable on-deck cockpit dining area with a removable awning for al fresco dining under the stars. Under power, twin 215hp Caterpillar engines give her a cruising speed of 10 knots and a range of 2,500 nautical miles.

Avalon was asking $2,550,000.
