Clash of classics at the 2010 Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta | photo by Cory Silken

Far from a staid parade of old beauties, this classic regatta – hosted by the Antigua Yacht Club and part of the Panerai Classic Yacht Challenge – has verve, style and a very modern impetus.

Up to 60 yachts of great diversity – from centenarian sloops to their youthful Spirit of Tradition counterparts, and from comely J Class celebrities to Carriacou Caribbean working boats – convene each April in Antigua for six days of superb sailing, close racing, keen but friendly competition, mutual admiration and socialising.

Four races over four days culminate in ‘The Cannon’, which sees the entire fleet on the water in an amazing spectacle of graceful lines and straining sails.

The 2011 event

Ira Epstein and his beautiful 1957 Marconi ketch Lone Fox were awarded the much-prized Panerai Trophy in the 2011 event, with other winners including Eli Fuller and his Carriacou sloop Zemi, Famous Mauro and Sunshine, Carlo Falcone and Mariella, Robert Soros and Juno, and Schooner International and Elena.

Bolero 1948 did very well in her class, winning three trophies for Ed Kane and Marty Wallace; while Tarbat Investments’ Velsheda repeated her 2010 achievement to beat RSV’s Ranger to top spot in the Spirit of Tradition A Class.

If this year’s event was anything to go by, the 25th Regatta in 2012 promises much…

The next regatta takes place 19 – 24 April 2012.
