The best superyacht fireplaces

The Art Deco-inspired interiors on board Stefania, which were styled in-house by builder Dynamiq, are equally as opulent as the gilded exterior of the 41 metre superyacht. The Gatsby-esque theme is clear in the dining area in the main saloon, which has a formal, gold-streaked dining table backed by an opulent mirrored wall with a modern, fully-functioning fireplace. “Having real fire is possible due to the bio-ethanol technology,” explains Dynamiq founder Sergei Dobroserdov, adding that the fireplace will likely prove useful in the cooler climates which Stefania can reach thanks to her 3,000 nautical mile cruising range.

There are as many as five ethanol-fuelled and real-wood fireplaces on board 136 metre superyacht Flying Fox, plus an additional two firepits on the outdoor decks for cooler evenings. These fireplaces help create a cosy, home-away-from-home feel throughout the interiors of the world's most expensive superyacht for charter, which were designed by Mark Berryman. Project manager at builder Lürssen, Florian Preuss, explains that they work “like a normal fireplace at home” with the exception that insulated ducts force smoke up through the mast so that the fireplaces meet marine safety regulations. Preuss adds: “the glass pane in front needs to be closed all the time and there is a shut-off mechanism.”

Named after a legendary Viking warrior, explorer yacht Ragnar has been designed for cruising through the cool waters of nordic countries, and her wood-panelled and tartan-patterned RWD interiors are suitably cosy for such destinations. “The owner is fond of British-style pubs,” says designer Charlie Baker, so it's hardly surprising that a traditional-looking steam fireplace built from wood and grey stone would add adornment to the upper saloon. Fireplaces have also been installed in the cabins for a homely feel throughout 68 metre superyacht.

This fireplace in the main saloon of this 66.5 metre classic is one of three found on board. There are also fireplaces in the owner's saloon and the formal dining room. The fireplaces on board Haida 1929 “burn small blocks that are like biofuel, which are the same sort of fireplaces that would be installed in apartments in New York City”, Captain Daan de Witt explained. Unlike some onboard “fireplaces” that use steam and LED light to produce a fire-like effect, the biofuel used on Haida 1929 generates some real warmth.

Designed by Francois Zuretti, the interiors on board the 106 metre Lürssen superyacht Amadea have a classic and regal feel. This is most aptly seen in the main saloon, which features a white marble stone fireplace finished with gold details. When the fire is roaring, this element adds warmth and a cosy ambience to the yacht's central room. A further firepit and comfy sofa area can be found on the huge aft deck - perfect for keeping warm outside on a chilly night.

You’ll warm to any one of the four fireplaces on board Kismet, but our personal favourite is the main deck firepit - by far the best spot to gather and enjoy pre-dinner aperitifs. Launched in July 2014, this 95 metre Lürssen took a major honour at the 2015 World Superyacht Awards, claiming top spot in the Displacement Motor Yachts of 1,300GT to 2,999 GT of 75 metres and above category. Having already built the first Kismet, now named Global, owner Shahid Kahn knew what was required when he decided to build a new bigger, better yacht: a winning combination.

When the 60 metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Spirit of The C's underwent a refit from 2014-2016, a fireplace was one of the new design elements added on board. Rome-based architect Michela Reverberi, who was in charge of the interior transformation, left greater open spaces in the main saloon but decided to add a long, thin gas fireplace as an accent piece, which contributes very little visual weight with its sleek design.

Owner Jan Verkerk was instrumental to this ice-breaking explorer yacht's rebirth at Icon Yachts and his antarctic cruising plans necessitated plenty of cosy spaces to warm up after a day out in the cold. The elaborate main deck fireplace is the most notable example on board 77.4 metre Legend, with ornate fish sculptures and dark woodwork contrasting with the plush white armchairs, but there are also several steam-powered Opti-myst fires on board this remarkable and rugged globetrotter.

The spacious skylounge on board 40.52 metre Serenity was designed in a gentleman's club style, complete with a fully stocked bar and humidor. However, it is the superyacht fireplace that steals the show, as its shimmering electric glow catches the eye from all angles. Launched in 2016 by IAG Yachts, Serenity was styled inside and out by Evan K Marshall.

At the forward end of the dining room on Serene is a magnificent glass-enclosed gas fire pit. This 133.9 metre Fincantieri had her interiors styled by Reymond Langton Design and boasts 4,500 square metres of interior space. Other amenities throughout her seven decks include a hangar and two helicopter landing pads, a large salt water swimming pool which can accommodate service craft and a submarine with a diving depth of up to 100 metres.
