A marina in Fort Lauderdale has closed whilst officials investigate the cause of a fire that destroyed two luxury yachts.

The blaze engulfed a 78-foot Azimut named *Lady Lex *and a 50-foot Sunseeker called It’s About Time at Yacht Management facilities on Sunday. Four other ships were damaged in the fire, which eyewitnesses say reached two stories high.

It’s not known what caused the fire at the Yacht Management facilities on the New River, Fort Lauderdale. The marina will remain closed until at least Tuesday evening whilst the investigation takes place.

“Marina fires are not uncommon, but I’m not aware of any history at this facility,” said Lee Burke, director of risk management for the marina owners. “The safety history there is exemplary.”

The two destroyed luxury yachts were tied together – and to at least four other boats – but the firefighters managed to contain the fire by using a tow boat and a fireboat to create space between the yachts.
