This summer marks a special milestone for Suntex Marinas as the group prepares for the grand opening of the new Las Olas Marina in Fort Lauderdale. The redevelopment project, which has been in the planning for eight years in collaboration with the City of Fort Lauderdale, involved extensive public engagement, meticulous design and rigorous approval processes. Strategically located at the heart of the newly revitalised Fort Lauderdale beach, the marina allows visiting yachts to experience the "Venice of America", a destination famed for its scenic inland waterways, New River and the Atlantic Ocean. Scheduled to open this summer, Las Olas Marina is poised to become an “iconic” landmark in the area, further highlighted by its role in hosting part of the much-anticipated Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.
“The Las Olas Marina is the capstone element of [Fort Lauderdale's] iconic Las Olas Corridor and gateway to [its] world-class beaches and resorts,” says David Filler, chief development officer at Suntex Marinas. “The marina was designed to be an integral component of the City of Fort Lauderdale’s $130 million investment in public parking, promenades, parks and public walkways.”
World-class berthing facilities
Las Olas Marina is set to be a world-class destination for superyachts and visitors to South Florida for the next 50 years. The marina will feature 68 berths capable of accommodating vessels up to 106 meters LOA. With 2,100 linear metres of floating concrete docks, the facility is designed to provide ample space and stability for a variety of yachts. Security is a top priority, with gates at every dock entrance, onsite security and staffing available around the clock and actively monitored cameras ensuring the safety and peace of mind for all visitors.
Premier amenities and dining
The complex will offer a vibrant new waterfront hub in Fort Lauderdale. Central to its appeal is the 4,500-square-metre, award-winning Ocean Prime. The two-storey restaurant features spacious outdoor seating and exclusive private dining rooms and serves world-renowned steak, seafood and signature cocktails. Two other restaurants will offer a diverse menu that will be open to both crew and the public along with boutique retail stores.
The marina's pedestrian-friendly landscape will encourage leisurely strolls and easy access to various amenities. A three-storey marine services building will house the harbour master’s office, chandlery and additional offices. State-of-the-art infrastructure improvements include a new wastewater system and a tri-plex pump station facility.
With crew welfare also a top priority, the complex will also feature a dedicated crew area with a lounge, rooftop gym, swimming pool, chef’s kitchen, recreational spaces and extensive crew amenities.
Environment and social responsilibity
Las Olas Marina will be Clean & Resilient Marina-certified. As part of its efforts to enhance the city’s environmental resilience, the marina will convert three acres back to water and natural habitat and provide 610 linear metres of seawall improvements to protect against rising sea levels.
Economically, the marina is poised to make a significant positive impact on the local community, contributing $6 million annually in state and local tax revenue and $446,000 annually in real estate property tax revenue. Additionally, the marina will create over 1,100 new full-time jobs across multiple business sectors, supporting Fort Lauderdale’s status as one of the world’s major yachting hubs and bolstering the $8.9 billion local boating industry.
“Once opened, Las Olas Marina will be one of the largest mega yacht marinas in the United States and centrepiece of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show,” Filler explains. “The entire marina has been designed to accommodate the largest yachts in the world with Bellingham floating docks, substantial shore power and unmatched upland amenities for captains and crew members. Las Olas Marina is located at the beginning of Fort Lauderdale’s renowned Las Olas Boulevard and a short walk to the city’s famous beach.”
