Charter corner: On board Hana with captain John Blaney and captain Charles Bushell

26 February 2021

When it comes to family charter vacations nothing is more important than a garage brimming with water toys. From JetSkis and Seabobs to paddleboards and kayaks there should be something to suit every member of the charter party. Enter Hana. The 42 metre CRN motor yacht, available to charter with Camper & Nicholsons, is packed with the latest gear for thrill-seekers and sun-worshippers alike. Captain John Blaney and captain Charles Bushell walk us through the 42 metre superyacht...

What makes Hana a great charter yacht?

Charles: At 42 metres, Hana can be accommodated in most marinas while her 453 GT is reflective of a much larger vessel, offering the guests plenty of room to roam. She is well designed and her fuel consumption is relatively low thanks to advanced underwater hull design. Of course, the crew cannot be overlooked and all of our crew are dedicated professionals willing to make the onboard experience one that is special and unique.

John: It is her proven track record, Hana and her crew have consistently overtime maintained and improved upon her reputation as a great fun charter yacht and corporate event platform.

What is your favourite feature and why does it work well for charter guests?

Charles: The main great advantage is the huge sundeck, which works very well for a corporate type charter; the swim platform is also well-liked by guests with the gym hidden behind a glass wall for workouts with a view. All the guest cabin have large portholes, which allow lots of natural light into each cabin and this is also the case for the bridge deck salon which has a lot of glass and offers great views.

John: There is a harmony and flow to the CRN 42 design which allows guests to immediately enjoy the warm luxury feeling and see the adventure possible once they have stepped onboard. With the lounge and the outdoor dining space located on the bridge deck, which is a real focal point,  it is nice to be able to welcome the guests to the bridge and see the heart of the operation while enjoying the charter.

What type of charter is Hana best suited to?

Charles: Mainly family charters with a massive array of toys and a good-sized tender, making every day different. Hana is able to offer fun for all the family day and night, not forgetting the sundeck TV for the evening movie nights under the stars. We are also great for corporate events as we have plenty of exterior space.

John: Family charters are indeed the most fun and Charles and I like to feel that we are fiercely adaptable and can interpret the charter experience for any party to jump on board and have a luxury-plus adventure. We’ve worked with Red Eye Events one of our Corporate Clients, at the Monaco GP for over five years now, and this event has gone from strength to strength for these valued clients and Hana. It's a shame COVID broke this historic run for all.

What is your most memorable charter moment on board Hana?

Charles: Passing through Messina Straits at night at just the right time to coincide with a large fireworks display taking place ashore as we slowly passed, while guests were finishing dinner.

John: There are many but I recall a beautiful day anchored off Marina Piccola on the southern side of Capri. With the sun going down we took the guests back to Marina Grande transiting through I Faraglioni then hugging the rocks through Scuoglio del Monacone. It is like going into a tunnel on a yacht, if you can imagine that, it’s a fabulous surprise for the guests at the end of the day. They feel they can almost reach out and run their hands along the towering rock walls all the time hoping the helmsman has a steady nerve.

Where is your favourite charter destination and why?

Charles: Balearic Islands - Mallorca has so much to offer from great food, spectacular scenery, and beaches with some very nice five star restaurants, whereas Minorca offers some of the same but at a slower speed, and great history of the huge harbour of Mahon. Ibiza although known for the nightclubs, offers great lunch venues and perfect swimming in crystal waters. All three of the islands are close by and can be reached with an overnight voyage.

John: Unfortunately we’ve only been there with the owners but I feel the Red Sea is a much-untapped destination for winter cruising. If guests are looking for somewhere remote and beautiful with great scope for more of an off the grid experience and underwater adventure, it is a must. The diving is breath-taking on offshore reefs.

How does Hana go the extra mile for charter guests?

Charles: All the crew on Hana are very focused on making the client's trip on board exactly what they want, by ensuring that we plan well in advance and discuss the “must do” items. I have personally worked very hard to maintain a relationship with all the Harbour Masters of the Ports we visit to ensure that we get the berths we want and able to react quickly to clients request. Speaking the local language also helps a lot, getting the local knowledge and finding that something that others miss. I make it vitally important to know the key decision-makers, that can affect our client's request, and our ability to offer the very best service, from suppliers to night club managers and tour guides. I personally always think "what would I like the vessel to offer” and make sure the principal onboard has confidence in my itineraries and can relax knowing I have all bases covered.

John: Charles and I, we never sleep!
