Sailing yacht Windrose of Amsterdam sold at auction

4 August 2015 • Written by Malcolm MacLean

The auction of the 46.32 metre sailing yacht  Windrose of Amsterdam took place on July 29th and, surprisingly, out of four serious bidders, the bank that originally put her up for auction came up with the winning bid.

To recap: she was built in aluminium by Dutch yard  Holland Jachtbouw with exterior and interior styling by  Dykstra Naval Architects and was launched in 2002. She made an immediate impression with her low freeboards, elegant sheer and long overhangs. She went on to make headlines by breaking the transatlantic crossing record twice, in 2002 and in 2005.

Conceived to win races, she also evokes a bygone era with a handcrafted interior in solid wood paneling and furniture, contrasted with cream ceilings and sophisticated lighting. Accommodation is for eight guests in four cabins consisting of a master suite, two equal twins and one bunk bed cabin with two Pullman berths, all with en suite shower rooms.

Windrose of Amsterdam also offers a spacious main saloon with comfortable seating and dining, a large pilothouse saloon, a roomy divided cockpit and a conveniently sheltered deckhouse. Her elegant lines and classic detailing also ensure that she is a welcome sight at all the large classic yacht regattas around the world.

In autumn 2011 she had her hull repainted and all new cockpit seat cushions and covers. This was in addition to her usual regular maintenance programme. A single 425hp Lugger engine gives her a cruising speed of 10 knots and, according to a recent survey report, she is in immediate need of a full refit.
