Schooners Athena and Eos book in for Royal Huisman refits

Two of the world’s largest sailing yachts Eos and Athena are set to receive extensive refits at Royal Huisman’s refit division Huisfit.

The schooners will both undergo their refits at Royal Huisman’s deep seawater facility in The Netherlands which are expected to last several months during the winter season.

The three masted 93 metre Lürssen schooner Eos, which was delivered in 2006, has been booked in for a 2018-19 refit programme which will include a major overhaul of the MTU 4000 series main engines and a rebuild of all three gensets.

The shaft lines, gearboxes, thrusters and stabilisers will all be overhauled and serviced while the rudder and rudder motor will also receive a full service.

The hull, superstructures and rig will all be repainted and varnished while the tank arrangement will be reorganised. Various on board systems including the watermaker, treatment unit, bilge and fuel separators will all be serviced.

Meanwhile the 90 metre three masted Athena, which was built by Royal Huisman in 2004 and is currently for sale, has already arrived at the Holland refit unit.

After undertaking extensive world cruising voyages, the Dykstra Naval Architects and Pieter Beeldsnijder-designed schooner will undergo an overhaul of the main engines and gensets and a full service of the rigging.

Various board systems and piping will be updated while the teak on the main and bridge decks will be replaced. Finally, the hull, superstructure and rig will be repainted.

Royal Huisman sales manager Bert Tromp said the shipyard is “particularly pleased that this announcement concerns two of the world’s largest and most prestigious sailing yachts – both of them long term Huisfit clients.”

He added: “Not only that, but we will have the privilege of working on the world’s 5th and 6th largest sailing yachts at the same time, which is quite an accolade for Huisfit.”
