The best superyacht fireplaces

Fireplaces on superyachts are a technical challenge, but when properly designed they can provide a stunning centrepiece for the saloon, instantly warming the atmosphere on board. To get into the festive spirit as the weather gets colder, BOAT rounds up the very best yachts with fireplaces, starting with the golden-hulled Stefania...

The Art Deco-inspired interiors on board Stefania, which were styled in-house by builder Dynamiq, are equally as opulent as the gilded exterior of the 41 metre superyacht. The Gatsby-esque theme is clear in the dining area in the main saloon, which has a formal, gold-streaked dining table backed by an opulent mirrored wall with a modern, fully-functioning fireplace. “Having real fire is possible due to the bio-ethanol technology,” explains Dynamiq founder Sergei Dobroserdov, adding that the fireplace will likely prove useful in the cooler climates which Stefania can reach thanks to her 3,000 nautical mile cruising range.

Flying Fox

Credit: Guillaume Plisson

There are as many as five ethanol-fuelled and real-wood fireplaces on board 136 metre superyacht Flying Fox, plus an additional two firepits on the outdoor decks for cooler evenings. These fireplaces help create a cosy, home-away-from-home feel throughout the interiors of the world's most expensive superyacht for charter, which were designed by Mark Berryman. Project manager at builder Lürssen, Florian Preuss, explains that they work “like a normal fireplace at home” with the exception that insulated ducts force smoke up through the mast so that the fireplaces meet marine safety regulations. Preuss adds: “the glass pane in front needs to be closed all the time and there is a shut-off mechanism.”

Avocette III

Credit: Billy Black

After lying unused for the best part of a century, Avocette III underwent a transformation under the supervision of Bill Morong of Yachting Solutions. While preserving the classic, Gatsby-esque 1930s exterior design from period drawings, the interior was totally refurbished. The pièce de résistance is a working, stainless-steel fireplace that the owner himself dug up in a small London shop. The fireplace is the centrepiece of the yacht’s convertible saloon/master at amidships.

Haida 1929

This fireplace in the main saloon of this 66.5 metre classic is one of three found on board. There are also fireplaces in the owner's saloon and the formal dining room. The fireplaces on board Haida 1929 “burn small blocks that are like biofuel, which are the same sort of fireplaces that would be installed in apartments in New York City”, Captain Daan de Witt explained. Unlike some onboard “fireplaces” that use steam and LED light to produce a fire-like effect, the biofuel used on Haida 1929 generates some real warmth.

Legend

Owner Jan Verkerk was instrumental to this ice-breaking explorer yacht's rebirth at Icon Yachts and his antarctic cruising plans necessitated plenty of cosy spaces to warm up after a day out in the cold. The elaborate main deck fireplace is the most notable example on board 77.4 metre Legend, with ornate fish sculptures and dark woodwork contrasting with the plush white armchairs, but there are also several steam-powered Opti-myst fires on board this remarkable and rugged globetrotter.

Attessa IV

Credit: Neil Rabinowitz

Ramp up the romance and snuggle up next to this marble-finished 19th century English fireplace in the forward dining saloon of 100 metre superyacht Attessa IV. Originally built in 1999 by Hayashikane, Attessa IV was masterfully rebuilt by her loving owner Dennis Washington, for whom redoing yachts is his passion, pleasure and relaxation. The puzzle he worked on was how to keep such a large vessel intimate, both inside and out. To control the vastness of the space, he envisioned Attessa IV as having a waist at the area of the central ventilation and exhaust trunks amidships, and flares to widen the side decks fore and aft.
