Setting the scene for the task
Following a successful degree course you were invited to join one of the world’s largest design companies who specialise in transportation design. Every two years, the company Chairman holds an internal design competition, focused on future design. The renewal of your contract depends on your performance within the competition.
The Chairman believes that designers should be striving to reduce their impact on the planet and he was inspired by the launch of a large motor yacht that is partially powered by sail. If this could become commonplace, pollution could be reduced enormously. This year’s task is to design a sail assisted motor yacht that is as beautiful as it is original, integrating the best design elements of motor yachts and sailing yachts.
One of the world's leading yacht builders, Oceanco, who have expressed considerable interest in promoting the concept and finding a client, will provide the hull design of a yacht intended for motor-sailing between 80m length over all (LOA) and 84m LOA (depending on the bow shape you choose).
The task comprises of two equally important elements, firstly the exterior styling of the motor–sailing yacht and, secondly, the layout of three decks.
