Cote d’Azur Life

Medical
From landlines emergency numbers are:
Samu (ambulance): 15
Police: 17
Pompiers (Fire brigade): 18

From mobile phones for all services call: 112 (not available in Monaco).
Hospitals and clinics can be found in all major towns.

Hazards
Mosquitoes in the summer months; sandflies on the sandy beaches; jellyfish (meduses) can be abundant during the summer.

For jellyfish stings, received wisdom recommends: rinse affected area with sea water (not soft water), remove any remaining sting with pincers. Do not rub the sting. In severe cases the venom can be neutralised with vinegar or hot sea water. Analgesic medication soothes pain.
See www.meduse.acri.fr.

Crime and drugs
Theft of personal possessions is not uncommon on the Cote d’Azur – so sensible precautions apply. Be aware of a dim possibility of ‘snatch and grab’ thefts at traffic lights. Drugs are forbidden and it is illegal to travel when drunk (including by foot). Crime in Monaco is considered rare.

The twisting 77-lap circuit offers the ultimate in street racing, and the event is one of the highlights of the European social scene, with fashion shows, parties and balls held throughout race weekend.

May 2012
Founded in 1946, Le Festival de Cannes is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious film festivals, held annually at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès. Films compete for the Palme d’Or, which is awarded to the film judged to be the best by a jury comprising a President and various film or art personalities. Various other awards go to short films, feature films and aspiring talent as well as actors, actresses, directors and screenplays. During the non-public festival, which is usually well attended by movie stars, directors and doyens of the industry, film screenings run alongside master-classes given by renowned filmmakers and exhibitions. For those in the business there are networking events and a movie market that is considered to be the busiest in the world. It all culminates in the glittering awards ceremony.

The Rendezvous in Monaco
June 2012
For dedicated adherents of the yachting lifestyle, an annual celebration is called for, and for coming up to 21 years, Monaco has been the venue for just such a gathering. Four days of fun and games both on and off the water encourage owners and their guests to enjoy their yachts to the full in the company of others.

Kicking off with a champagne reception, the activities include yacht hops, tender racing, water sports and a 007-style water-borne poker run. There are also luncheons on private beaches (reached by tender) and sumptuous black-tie dinners. Superyacht chefs, nominated by their owners, are pitted against each other in a competition of skill and creativity to produce a unique dish out of the same ingredients, and cocktail concoctions are judged. Parties are de rigueur, both on board and on shore, culminating with the Diamonds and White Rendezvous Party at the Monte Carlo Beach Club in Monaco’s true jet set tradition. A farewell brunch and informal prize-giving brings the four days to a close.
