ORCsy handicapping rule to be used in Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta

The new ORC SuperYacht handicapping rule will be used for the first time at the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta before being adopted by the Bucket Regattas and Superyacht Cup Palma later this year.

The new OCR SuperYacht Rule was created by the Offshore Racing Congress and the Superyacht Racing Association in response to members' pleas for more transparent rules when handicapping racing superyachts to make the competition as fair as possible.

"What years ago resembled a parade of sail, with an emphasis on the social component, now has a sharper focus on competing," explains Kate Branagh, co-chair of the Superyacht Racing Association. "While it isn't a 'win at all cost' outlook one often finds at the grand prix end of conventional sailboat racing, most superyacht owners would like to know that they have a chance at a podium finish when they sail a great race."

The new ORC SuperYacht handicapping rule will be debuted by Edoardo Recchi, YCCS Sporting Director. “We have been listening to our constituents and there have been recurring requests for more transparency with the handicapping. The ORCsy rule delivers that and their working party continues to make great progress as they prepare for the 2015 regattas,” Recchi says.

All yachts entering the Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous in Virgin Gorda must adhere to Amendment N.01 Rating/Handicap Rule and Certificates within the Notice of Race, and all handicap certificates are due to the Organising Committee, YCCS, no later than 1st March.

The ORCsy handicap application is available now on the ORC website, where you will also find an explanation of the background of the rule as well as how it works, and practicalities for the 2015 season in more detail.
