Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup | photo by Carlo Borlenghi

The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup has been a fixture on the racing calendar since the first Maxi World Championship in 1980, and attracts the biggest, fastest, most technologically advanced yachts to Porto Cervo each September.

Brainchild of HH the Aga Khan’s Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) in Sardinia, and sponsored for many years now by Rolex, this is where the world’s cutting-edge racing machines – sophisticated carbon super Maxis, Maxis and mini Maxis – gather to do battle on the azure waters off this intimate resort.

Events ashore hosted by the YCCS match the pace of the action afloat, highlights of which are the IMA Dinner, Rolex Crew Party, Rolex Gala Dinner and Saturday’s final prize-giving ceremony.

Traditionally, the racing programme includes a variety of courses off the stunning north-eastern coast of Sardinia. The courses are designed to make best use of the prevailing weather conditions: winds in September can be anywhere between light, thermally induced sea breezes to the famous mistral, which can blow from the north-west at upwards of 45 knots.

The 2011 event

The 2011 Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup concluded in dramatic style with the completion of the scheduled programme for all classes.

The class victors were: Mini Maxi Rolex World Championship: Niklas Zennström’s Rán 2 (GBR); Maxi Racing: Irvine Laidlaw’s Highland Fling (MON); Maxi Racing/Cruising division: Danilo Salsi’s DSK Pioneer Investments (ITA); Supermaxi: Filip Balcaen’s Nilaya (GBR); Wally: Claus-Peter Offen’s Y3K (GER).

This year’s event takes place 2-8 September 2012.
