Adela in the Pendennis Cup
You don’t have to be a Pendennis owner to participate in the biennial Pendennis Cup, but many of the yachts that do have some sort of history with the yard.
There is, of course, the added advantage of having a skilled workforce close at hand should anything happen in the fray – as Tomahawk discovered when her mast broke in the 2010 event!
The action takes place in Falmouth, Cornwall, on the English south coast, and is timed to follow on from the Antigua-Falmouth Rum Race in May, with the 2012 regatta scheduled just before the J Class Regatta.
The five days of competitive racing out on the waters of Falmouth Bay are complemented by a shoreside entertainment programme which, in 2010, included a welcome barbecue at the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club, Cornish gig racing, a curry night and the St Mawes club night.
The racing is managed by the Port of Falmouth Sailing Association and the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club. Adela took the honours in Class 1 in the 2010 event, with Pinuccia triumphing in Class 2.
The 2012 Pendennis Cup is eagerly awaited. If previous events are anything to go by, the winds will be brisk, the races closely fought and the social programme worth getting back to shore for.
The next regatta takes place 2 – 7 July 2012.
