London, Sydney, Auckland, Miami and St Barths – and that was just March. The bags under my eyes are a bit bigger and darker, but we are, after all, the global authority in superyachting. In Australia the industry is working hard to expose superyacht charter to a new audience, while in New Zealand the weak dollar has me wondering why more northern hemisphere owners aren’t looking to build boats in a country known for building amazing boats. I was fortunate on the New Zealand leg to spend a few days in the Bay of Islands, one of my favourite places on this big, blue marble. There’s a real peace to be found among the green dots flung across the charts of that region. It helps that the fishing is immense. If you weren’t limited to a bag of 20 fish a day, you could quickly fill your freezer with kahawai and snapper.
In golden St Barths, the Bucket continues to lure a fleet of the world’s finest sailing yachts, but concerns remain about the long-term appeal of superyacht racing. The non-spinnaker Corinthian Spirit Class has lowered the barrier to entry on all fronts and means you’re not forced to fork out hundreds of thousands of euros for a boatful of rock-star sailors, but we still need to see more engagement from sailing yacht owners in the world’s premier regattas. That’s a central challenge for the newly appointed head of the Superyacht Racing Association, double Olympic gold medallist Shirley Robertson, but one she is more than up to. This is a big year for racing, with news to come shortly about a superyacht regatta during the America’s Cup. So there’s a bit going on. And BOAT, as ever, will be in the middle of it all. If there’s one thing I can assure you, it’s that we will always do this job from a deck, not a desk.
