Charter yacht of the week: 85m Bold, a beacon of contemporary superyacht design

11 April 2024 • Written by Georgia Boscawen

Each week, we place a spotlight on the world’s finest superyachts for charter. This week, BOAT delves into the details of the 85.3-metre Bold, an all-aluminium military-inspired superyacht camouflaging a remarkable charter yacht that ticks all the boxes.

With a knife-edge design, striking grey exterior and mighty helideck (certified for a 3.2-tonne, twin-engine, eight-seat AgustaWestland AW109S Grand), the 85.3-metre Bold wouldn’t look out of place among the destroyers in a naval port. Look a little closer however, and you’ll see that while these features are tough, they are also immaculately faired as Bold is a world cruising superyacht that is designed to immerse her guests in luxury.

Marking the 50th yacht created by the illustrious designer and naval architect, Espen Øino, Bold was destined to be a real-world cruiser that could operate economically. To hit the brief, she needed to carry a helicopter, have large outside living areas and very comfortable interiors with connections with the outside.

Bold was also not the first vessel that Øino designed for the commissioning owner – an exciting partnership that has proved successful over the years – as together the owner and designer worked on several other yachts.

For the charter market, Bold posed an exciting addition to the fleet as she stole the show during her debut at the 2019 Monaco Yacht Show soon after her delivery.

Key Features

LOA: 85.3
Builder: Silver Yachts
Guests: 12
Crew: 20
Year: 2019

Built by Australian builder, Silver Yachts, the 85.3-metre was no easy feat and represents a major achievement for the yard which switched its focus from slim, elegant superyachts to refined utilitarian. Bold also has an impressive range of nearly 5,000 nautical miles, allowing for far-flung excursions.

Stepping on board, it’s clear that she’s not just a spectacle from the water. Guests will find a whopping aft deck that is over 30 metres long. Not only can this be used as a lounging space but also a party space and a helipad. A movie screen can be found tucked inside the party space that also doubles as a heli garage – a fitting, clever design for the Swiss Army Knife of superyachts. The aft sections of the bulwarks also unfold to provide clearance for the helicopter landing and create terraces over the water.

"She’s an explorer yacht and just has it all," says the charter manager at Hill Robinson, Camille Medina. "There’s a massive heli deck, an extensive toy chest, a winter garden and a cinema. She really is one of the world’s most iconic vessels."

A true entertainer, there is an additional party space on board, which can be found higher up on the yacht for charter. On the sundeck, sunpads sit around a 2,700-litre Jacuzzi, which allows cooling off but is not in sight of any onlookers as it's hidden behind glass which also acts as wind protection. There is also a firepit and the equipment to set up another movie screen.

While the aft section of the bridge deck can facilitate a second helicopter there is also a bar, serving stations, two rotisseries and an induction hob, making it a fabulous banqueting space. Contemporary, free-standing furniture by Paola Lenti does well to inject some colour into the interiors.

Life on board Bold

Accommodation on board is for 12 guests across eight guest cabins comprising of the owner’s suite, three VIP guest cabins, and four double guest cabins. The owner’s suite includes a master cabin, his and hers ensuite bathrooms and a private saloon with direct access to exterior decks.

Among the crew of 20, Bold benefits from impeccable service that go beyond the call of duty thanks to a range of skill sets. "All the crew is extremely water sport oriented," says Medina. "We also have a DJ onboard recording mixes for SoundCloud, a yoga instructor and a videographer."

In the main saloon, brightly coloured sofas frame the perimeter of a custom carpet with a bold geometric print under a backlit ceiling. Bold forgoes the habitual main deck saloon and dining combination in favour of a spectacular loft arrangement, with a high ceiling that measures up to 2.8 metres in the centre. Striking pieces of furniture are then scattered atop parquet floor made of 2.5-millimetre-thick oak on honeycomb.

Another defining feature of the yacht is the winter garden – an essential component of the world cruising concept. The idea is that this space can be enjoyed anywhere in the world and at just about any time of the year. It is connected physically and visually to the saloon, but can be shut off with weathertight doors.
