Why Bahia Mar Marina is the smart choice for selling superyachts

For superyacht brokers, location is about strategy. Where a yacht is berthed during the sales process can influence everything from buyer interest to closing timelines. In Fort Lauderdale, the undisputed yachting capital of the world, Bahia Mar Marina consistently stands out as the broker's choice.

But what makes Bahia Mar Marina more than just another Fort Lauderdale berth? The answer lies in a combination of strategic positioning, operational advantages and financial benefits that can save sellers hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Fort Lauderdale's yachting epicentre

Bahia Mar Marina sits in the heart of Fort Lauderdale's yachting district, positioning listed yachts exactly where serious buyers expect to find serious inventory.

Tim Derrico, head of sales at HMY Yacht Sales, a superyacht brokerage firm based in the Bahia Mar Yachting Center, explains the visibility advantage: "Bahia Mar is the largest marina in the Fort Lauderdale area, and when the opportunity arose to have a very visible office at this facility, it would have been foolish to pass on it."

In terms of logistics, Bahia Mar Marina's location also eliminates friction. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is just 15 minutes away, allowing international buyers to fly in, view a yacht and return home the same day. Everything a superyacht needs during the sales process is within immediate reach. Fuel docks, provisioning services and some of the world's leading refit yards are minutes away. A yacht berthed at Bahia Mar Marina can be survey-ready, sea-trial-ready and buyer-ready without relocating.

Ted McCumber is the managing director of Feadship Americas, which has operated from Bahia Mar Marina since the 1970s. As a former superyacht captain, he understands the operational realities brokers and crew face during sales. "The crew loved [Bahia Mar Marina] because it's near the beach, it's near Las Olas, all the service providers are there and it's just an easy place to come into because it's all right there," he says.

One of its more practical advantages is its straightforward access to open water. Unlike many Fort Lauderdale marinas that require navigating complex canal systems or coordinating with bridge schedules, Bahia Mar offers direct access to the Atlantic. "In other places, you need a tugboat to get in. But it's straight in and straight out. It's just very simple," McCumber notes.

Another practical advantage brokers appreciate is Bahia Mar Marina's flexibility regarding maintenance and preparation work. "A nice thing about it is that [the marina] allows you to do shipyard work, as long as you don't make a mess. But you're not paying huge fees to have subcontractors come to you. On the face dock, we've had cranes there to remove life rafts and different things, so they are really flexible in what they let captains and crew do," McCumber explains.

The FTZ advantage

While location and logistics are compelling, Bahia Mar Marina's most significant advantage for superyacht brokers is its Foreign-Trade Zone (FTZ) designation – an area within the United States that is technically considered outside U.S. Customs territory for duty purposes. For superyacht sales, this creates a financial advantage.

Most superyachts are built outside the United States – for example, in Italy, the Netherlands or Turkey. Normally, bringing a foreign-built yacht into U.S. waters triggers immediate customs duties, typically 1.5 per cent of the yacht's value. On a $20 million superyacht, that's $300,000 due upfront.

At Bahia Mar Marina's FTZ, those duties are deferred indefinitely as long as the yacht remains within the zone. This means sellers aren't forced to pay customs duties while the yacht sits on the market, and buyers gain flexibility in how and when they take delivery. "HMY has used the Bahia Mar FTZ and it has proven to be a very accessible facility for both larger and smaller yachts,” Derrico confirms.

The lifestyle sells itself

Bahia Mar Marina is immaculately maintained. When brokers bring buyers to view a yacht here, the surroundings reinforce the quality of the product.

"Bahia Mar is located right on Fort Lauderdale beach; in fact, there is a beach access walkway above A1A (the beach road), which gives Bahia Mar clients direct access to the beach. There are also some excellent hotels, restaurants, bars and much more within walking distance of this marina," Derrico says.

For crew, the location is equally appealing. Happy crew means a well-maintained yacht, and a well-maintained yacht shows better and sells faster. Bahia Mar Marina offers excellent crew facilities, provisioning access and proximity to marine services.
