With four brand-new superyachts currently in build, each over 100 metres, there’s plenty happening at Oceanco. What’s more, this year the company isn’t just creating real yachts but digital ones too, as Oceanco was the first yacht builder to announce a collection of Superyacht NFTs. To keep us up to date, Oceanco’s Group Marketing Director, Paris Baloumis, has offered some insight into what we can expect from the innovative North European yacht builder in 2022.
A lively year for Oceanco…
We currently have four yachts in build and a few weeks ago we delivered the 117-metre Infinity, which for now is our largest motor yacht to date and the largest yacht ever built in The Netherlands. Additionally, this summer the 109-metre Y720 will be delivered and we have a 127-metre yacht expected to go on sea trials later this year.
With two busy facilities…
Overall, Oceanco has the capacity to work on multiple yachts of up to 160 metres at our increasingly capable and green facilities. Our outfitting yard and HQ in Alblasserdam continues to thrive. And since acquiring the Zwijndrecht site in 2019, we have established a construction and refit facility that has received a good number of refits already this year.
We have completed a maintenance period for the 82-metre Oceanco Alfa Nero, a six-month refit on our 62.6-metre Lucky Lady and an upgrade for the 96-metre Limitless. The yachts have all seen excellent results, which goes to show that there’s plenty of interest in upgrading operational yachts to more sustainable versions. We relish the opportunity to bring existing vessels in line with modern standards in terms of technology and aesthetics – but we also find it important to respect and preserve the original design.
Over recent years we have significantly invested in the sustainability of our own facilities, and have pledged to more than halve our impact on the environment compared to the benchmark by 2030, aiming for 100% of our electricity usage to be supplied by renewable energy sources. We are also integrating a circular economy framework into our operations.
Working on some new projects...
We continue to focus on pushing yachting in a positive and progressive direction. Much of our innovative work in this field falls under our Oceanco NXT initiative, in which we are bringing together thought leaders from a spectrum of industries to bring new perspectives and insights to yachting. When you see the Oceanco NXT endorsement on a yacht, you can expect elevated and sustainable standards of living.
Our first Oceanco NXT yacht design was the 90-metre motor yacht KAIROS, created in partnership with Pininfarina and Lateral, which was revealed at the 2021 Monaco Yacht Show. And now we are working on two Oceanco Tomorrow’s Designs that are also in harmony with Oceanco NXT. These exciting new designs will show our perspective on how yachts will be in the future and will be released soon.
And building for the digital age
At Oceanco we are always looking ahead, and we are definitely looking into the possibilities of accepting currencies beyond the traditional, centralised ones in the future. This spring we became the first shipyard to announce a collection of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and so far we’ve had a lot of interest and strong support. It’s important that we reach new demographic groups for the project, and to help with this we have partnered with CasperLabs, Dgallery, Pelorus and Megalodon to promote the collection across the world beyond the yachting arena.
Created by Bozca Unlimited Design, the NFTs are based on Oceanco’s 105-metre explorer concept Esquel, which was released in 2019. Importantly, these NFTs will grant holders special access to benefits both virtually and in the real world, such as taking part in the design of your very own digital yacht NFT on the Casper Blockchain, which is a world first.
The Superyacht NFTs whitelist is already open and live online, and we are looking forward to seeing what the uptake is on the first drop. We have definitely embraced and entered the NFT and Web3 and blockchain space for the long run, so watch this space!
