How the owner of 35m Il Gattopardo built his perfect yacht

Measuring a precise 35.35 metres, Il Gattopardo is a yacht built with clever details. The reason is that her commissioning owner knew what he wanted, and that was a yacht whose design harvested the best of his knowledge and experiences as a long-term yachtsman. Now Il Gattopardo is for sale for the first time, one of her two brokers, Bernard Gallay, founder of Bernard Gallay Yacht Brokerage (BGYB), shares more of her story.

Having come to know the yacht and her owner via the CEO of the refit yard MB92 in 2020, Gallay had the yacht on the market soon after. Prior to this, Il Gattopardo had emerged from a refit sporting a pristine repaint to her entire hull and superstructure. “Having only had one owner since new, Il Gattopardo is in immaculate condition,” says Gallay. “There hasn’t been any other refit works or updates, quite simply because the owner got exactly what he wanted.”

As a broker who has been on the scene for nearly 28 years, Gallay is in good stead to match Il Gattopardo to her next owner, and feels passionate about doing so. “Il Gattopardo is so ideally suited to a new owner who enjoys luxurious interiors and modern design,” he explains. “They will be able to truly benefit from Il Gattopardo’s original owner’s expertise and passion for being a yachtsman,” he adds.

“Her owner was very much involved in the construction process,” says Gallay. Having sought Massimo Verme for the exterior design, the owner guided the yacht’s custom design until she was launched as the Italian yard Permare’s second Amer 116 model in 2012. “The owner invested so much love and care into her construction, that the result is close to perfection, technically as well as aesthetically.”

One of the first items on the owner’s brief was to be able to travel at high speeds. As a result, Il Gattopardo was built with a hull modified for performance and twin Caterpillar C32 Acert engines were chosen for fast cruising at up to 27 knots. While on the move, everything is kept stable thanks to her zero speed stabilisers – a feature that is essential for all-year-round cruising from her homeport in Palamos, Spain, with her Spanish crew.

Outdoor living is also a key aspect of the design. One of the most popular areas outside is the bridge deck where the yacht’s square Jacuzzi is found. While below on the main deck, guests can walk through the saloon out onto the aft area. Here, the owner selected a special custom step ladder with wide treads to be fitted to the large swimming platform for easy access in and out of the water. Both areas are well-suited to both alfresco dining and lounging and can be used in any weather thanks to overhead coverings.

For the interior, the owner opted for a contemporary style in neutral tones created by Josep Juanpere of GCA Architects. “Il Gattopardo’s interior can simply be described as contemporary Italian,” says Gallay. Throughout the yacht, modern furniture and dark wood detailing bring an elegant feel to the interior, as does the impressive and sleek glass and stainless-steel elevator that serves all decks. In addition, special attention was taken over the soundproofing and lighting throughout the yacht.

With her spacious layout and secure decks, “she is the perfect family yacht,” says Gallay. Plus, the whole family are able to fit on board across her three large staterooms. “The space inside is really her standout feature,” he adds.

In addition to superyacht sales and purchasing, Bernard Gallay also offers luxury yacht charter and yacht management services with already over eight superyacht sales in motion in 2022 so far. As one of 80 yachts currently for sale with BGYB, Il Gattopardo is listed with both Bernard Gallay Yacht Brokerage and Camper & Nicholsons. To find out more, click here.
