Italian refit shipyard Palumbo Superyachts Refit has rebranded as Palumbo Upfit, marking a strategic shift from project-based refit services to comprehensive, long-term yacht maintenance and upgrade support across its seven Mediterranean shipyards.
The rebrand consolidates everything from routine maintenance and conversions to major engineering work, structural modifications, systems overhauls and interior refits under a single, unified service model.
"We did not feel the need to change what we are," says Antonio Palumbo, CEO of Palumbo Upfit. "We felt the need to give a name to what we had become. Refit remains fundamental to our work, but Upfit reflects something broader: the responsibility to understand the vessel, to connect every intervention and to carry that knowledge and commitment forward over time."
He continues: "I am incredibly proud to look back at what my family has built over the past six decades and equally grateful for the trust placed in us by the owners and crews who return to us time and again. These long-standing relationships have allowed us to grow and extend our support beyond a single shipyard appointment. Our clients are not choosing one yard for one project; they gain access to an entire Mediterranean network, with the ability to plan where, when and how their yacht should evolve."
Palumbo traces its roots back to 1967, when it operated as a commercial vessel repair facility in Naples. Over the following decades, it expanded both geographically and technically, eventually establishing itself as a major player in the superyacht refit sector.
Today, Palumbo Upfit operates facilities in France, Italy, Malta and Croatia, covering more than 44.5 hectares of yard space. The network includes 5.6 kilometres of berthing, 10 dry docks capable of accommodating vessels up to 268 metres in length, seven floating docks with a combined lifting capacity of 40,000 tonnes, and multiple travel lifts and syncro lifts handling up to 3,300 tonnes.
"Refit still describes much of what we do," says Palumbo. "It simply no longer describes all of what we are responsible for. Upfit encapsulates the full lexicon of Palumbo and our preventive approach - one that not only addresses the work in the shed today but safeguards our clients for the future."
The scale of Palumbo Upfit's network allows the company to take a more strategic, forward-looking approach to yacht care. Rather than reacting to problems as they arise, the business works with owners to anticipate future maintenance needs, plan upgrades in advance and coordinate work across multiple yard visits.
Owners can now spread major projects across different facilities and timeframes, choosing the most suitable location based on the type of work required, the yacht's cruising schedule and the infrastructure available at each site. This means that painting, engineering upgrades, interior refits and structural work can be phased over several years as part of a coordinated plan, rather than being compressed into a single, intensive yard period.
Each project builds on the previous one, with technical knowledge and project history retained within the group. This continuity allows the company to track a yacht's evolution over time and make more informed recommendations about future work.
"We remain a family-led Group, with the fourth generation now involved in its management," says Palumbo. "For us, that means staying personally connected to the yards, to the people and to the decisions that shape each project. As our Group has grown, that direct involvement has become even more important. It keeps relationships close, gives continuity to commitments and ensures that responsibility is never reduced to a process or a title."
The rebrand introduces a new visual identity inspired by the Plimsoll line, a load line marking that has been mandatory on commercial vessels since the Merchant Shipping Act of 1876. The symbol indicates the safe loading limit for a vessel and is closely associated with maritime safety and stability.
Palumbo Upfit's logo incorporates the letters "UP" alongside a Plimsoll-style line, creating a shape that echoes the Greek letter Phi (Φ), a symbol historically linked to “proportion, balance and lasting structure”. The company says the mark reflects both its technical knowledge and its commitment to evolving while maintaining core values.
"We were guided by a way of working before we were defined by a name," says Palumbo. "For generations, Palumbo has been built on proximity to the vessel, respect for the work and accountability for the result. Upfit is not a new chapter in the Palumbo story. It is the name we have chosen for the thread that connects all the chapters. The name is new. The commitment behind it is not."
