With summer now in full swing and superyachts enjoying a busy season, figuring out where to berth this winter is next on the agenda. For those owners and captains whose yachts are not heading to the Caribbean or in need of a berth after the summer season, Barcelona’s Marina Port Vell can provide the perfect winter port.
Reaching this cosmopolitan city is easy by plane, and even easier by superyacht, as Marina Port Vell lies in the heart of Barcelona. Built during the 1992 Olympic Games, Marina Port Vell is one of Barcelona’s main attractions, as it is the only superyacht marina in the Mediterranean located within a city and is often populated by some of the world’s most famous superyachts.
These yachts and more have experienced how Marina Port Vell has established itself as one of the best and most popular superyacht destinations. And this winter, the marina will continue to offer a first-class service to all berthed yachts, their guests and crews, in the following ways:
Plenty of space
In September 2021, Marina Port Vell presented a €20 million investment plan to remodel the marina to increase capacity for superyachts and strengthen its services. The results will see an additional 23 berths for vessels up to 70 metres. For superyachts measuring up to 190 metres, the total berths available in winter will be 65.
The plan also focuses on sustainability and will grant the marina extra green spaces and a new bunkering system accessible at each berth to reduce pollution. Marina Port Vell’s green goals include the ESG strategy that ensures it is an environmentally-responsible company.
Brand-new buildings
Inside the marina, guests have access to six idyllic spaces: The Sea Garden, the Blue Wave, the Crew Lounge, the docks, as well as the award-winning flagship building, The Gallery. Having been recently remodelled with elegant and sculptural furniture thanks to one of the most recognised interior design studios in Barcelona, The Gallery is the ultimate meeting point. The exclusive glass building is home to a gym and several events and meeting spaces, including a high-tech VIP room, and the Crew Lounge. With space for up to 100 crew members, the Crew Lounge is popular for its terrace overlooking the city and activities such as yoga classes, social events, training sessions and captain’s seminars. Built on the water, guests may notice how the architectural design of The Gallery has been inspired by the surrounding superyachts.
City concierge
Barcelona is one of the most vibrant cities in the Western Mediterranean. In the city, the beaches, Sagrada Familia, Michelin Star restaurants, art galleries, shopping district and Gaudi houses are just some of the landmarks guests of Marina Port Vell can spend their time visiting. Or, if the abundant Spanish culture on the marina’s doorstep isn’t enough, there are ski resorts, mountain ranges and wine country nearby. To help guests on their way, there are car parking facilities and a concierge who can help organise everything from storage to diving trips.
Security is paramount to Marina Port Vell, and after having been certified as ISPS (International Ship and Port Security) compliant, the Marina operates with 24-hour gated security, patrolling guards, resident and visitor passes, 50+ CCTV cameras and infrared detection. The marina’s 24-hour mooring assistance team also go above and beyond to make sure superyachts have everything they need, particularly with any maintenance needs, as some of the industry’s key players are closely connected to the marina.
