Why this Dutch fine jewellery designer chooses imperfect gemstones

19 August 2026 • Written by Esther Ligthart for TJALLINGII

Dutch lawyer and jewellery designer Judith Tjallingii rejects conventional perfection in favour of character. At her Netherlands atelier, TJALLINGII creates one-of-a-kind rings featuring chameleon diamonds, pastel sapphires and rare gemstone inclusions - each piece designed through a bespoke process that celebrates individuality over flawlessness.

By day, Judith Tjallingii argues cases in Dutch courtrooms, untangling disputes between citizen and state. She brings the same instinct to her second calling: bespoke jewellery design. Both vocations, she says, are rooted in an awareness of existence and humanity's creative power: “Law, like a gemstone, is never seen from one angle only. Turn it, and something new is revealed.”

Judith Tjallingii, founder of TJALLINGII

In each, she honours the frameworks she inherits. Yet she goes further, working at the intersection of ethics and aesthetics, where the good meets the beautiful. It is this restless capacity to hold many truths and facets at once that shapes every TJALLINGII piece.

Born into a family of artists, surrounded by the heritage and rose gardens of historic estates near Amerongen in the Netherlands, Judith grew up surrounded by craftsmanship, beauty and an appreciation for careful observation. Her mother found inspiration in nature, while her grandfather painted the castle’s interiors and tended its rose garden. Their example taught her that beauty lies not in perfection, but in attention, character and care.

Today, that same instinct draws her to the colour shift of a gemstone or the rare inclusion most jewellers would reject. Where the market prizes flawlessness, TJALLINGII prizes character. It is a philosophy she calls aesthetic intelligence: the ability to recognise value where others see imperfection. Chameleon diamonds, pastel sapphires and multicoloured tourmalines are chosen not for symmetry, but for soul. Every TJALLINGII piece is one of a kind. No two rings are ever alike.

This philosophy extends beyond the collection itself. Judith is exploring the possibility of an intimate gemstone design experience for a select group in the future. In a private setting, guests would be invited to discover a curated selection of exceptional loose gemstones and to work closely with Judith to create a bespoke ring or earrings uniquely theirs.

Some may find their stone during such a sitting. Others discover it among Judith’s existing one-of-a-kind designs. The attraction is often immediate: a particular colour, an unexpected inclusion, a feeling that this stone belongs to them. The result is the same: a ring that exists nowhere else, made for no one else.

Given to mark a milestone or an anniversary, or simply as a gift to somebody who has never had something made entirely for them, the gesture says what words cannot.

For those who have already seen the world’s finest things, this is something else entirely: not merely acquired, but chosen. The result is deeply personal. TJALLINGII is designed by Judith Tjallingii at her atelier in the Netherlands. Discover the collection at tjallingii.com, and follow @ateliertjallingii for news of this exclusive gemstone sitting.
