VMG Astilleros de Sagunto has completed a three-year modernisation programme at its facility in the Port of Sagunto, Spain, adding a 5,000-tonne Pearlson Shiplift that the yard describes as the largest yacht-dedicated lifting system of its kind.
The shiplift features a 102-metre by 22-metre lifting platform and is designed to accommodate yachts up to 125 metres LOA, subject to vessel configuration and operational assessment. It was classified by Lloyd's Register in April 2026 under the society's Regulations for Lifting Appliances in a Marine Environment, giving the equipment independent verification against recognised marine lifting standards. The certification was presented to VMG during the Monaco Yacht Show 2026.
Once vessels are lifted ashore, an SPMT transfer system moves them from the platform to dedicated repair positions across the shipyard's 76,800-square-metre hard-standing area. This allows multiple work phases and technical teams to operate concurrently across the site.
The expansion is intended to support a wider range of large-yacht work, from scheduled maintenance and class inspections through to extensive refits, structural modifications and major technical upgrades. VMG says the facility's shore-side infrastructure also includes professional workspaces, crew facilities and welfare areas to support the owners' representatives, project managers, captains, yacht managers, crew and contractors typically involved in a refit.
Sagunto's location places the shipyard within the Valencia-Sagunto industrial and maritime cluster, which includes engineering firms, manufacturers and specialist contractors covering mechanical and electrical systems, propulsion, automation, coatings, composites, interiors, electronics and classification compliance.
Earlier in 2026, VMG Astilleros de Sagunto and Astilleros de Mallorca announced a partnership to develop a new mainland Spain centre for superyacht refit and maintenance, aimed at extending service capability for yachts over 75 metres.
VMG's development programme also includes investment in digitalisation, automation and renewable energy, along with water collection, treatment and reuse systems and expanded waste management practices, as part of efforts to reduce the environmental impact of shipyard operations.
Miquel Lliteras, Managing Director of VMG Astilleros de Sagunto, said the Lloyd's Register classification "reinforces VMG Astilleros de Sagunto's commitment to professional standards in the superyacht refit and repair sector," adding that it provides owners, captains and yacht managers "with additional confidence in our processes and capabilities, reflecting our dedication to quality, technical expertise and continuous improvement."
