Where to find a home-away-from-home this winter

10 November 2022 • Written by Chrissie McClatchie for Limassol Marina

It’s a Limassol landmark and an exclusive address to live and play that’s become a firm favourite of the superyacht set. Limassol Marina is an incredible winter base for any yacht and their crew.

The first and biggest superyacht marina in Cyprus is a location that offers all the convenience and amenities that today’s superyachts and their crew desire. You’ll find maintenance and refit areas for all niggling repairs, but also sandy beaches and barbeques to help visitors recharge their batteries.

Add in the fact that Cyprus is one of Europe’s warmest winter destinations, and well connected by air to many major cities, and you’ve got all the elements for a restful and rejuvenating off-season. What’s more, regardless of the time of year, the marina offers attractive, year-round berthing packages.

Here’s what you can expect from your home away from home at Limassol Marina this winter.

Winter sun

Along with near-perfect conditions for cruising during an extended summer season that runs from April to November, Cyprus is blessed with an abundance of winter sun. With its subtropical Mediterranean climate, the island boasts the warmest winters in Europe with temperatures averaging between 16°C to 25°C. This weather is perfect for enjoying the best of the facilities and region as you prepare for next year’s cruising season.

A yachting hub in the Eastern Mediterranean

To choose Limassol as your winter base is to open yourself up to the city’s fascinating history, pulsating nightlife, tantalising gastronomy and high-end shopping. A chance to use your downtime to unwind on sandy beaches, enjoy thrill-seeking adventure sports, settle in for long lunches in local tavernas serving up local specialities and visit traditional Cypriot villages in the island’s mountainous hinterland.

Yet its location in the heart of the Eastern Mediterranean makes Cyprus the gateway to the Suez Canal and a hub for air and sea travel to Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

The beating heart of the city

Enjoying a central location, just minutes away from downtown Limassol, this recently-built marina development boasts turn-key luxury real estate opportunities and 650 berths for yachts up to 110 metres in length. And, with the designer boutiques, lively waterfront bars and restaurants, supermarkets and the spa and fitness centre that are also conveniently on-site, it has quickly become the place to be. This year alone, the first international Jamie Oliver’s Kitchen restaurant has found a home here to great fanfare, alongside other international names like Wagamama and local favourites such as the island’s top fish restaurant, Pyxida.

To ensure visitors can make the most of everything on their doorstep, they can access a series of exclusive marina offers, including great discounts across the facilities, classes and memberships at the Sanctum Spa and Fitness Centre, and a private sandy beach and beach bar with services exclusively for berth holders, crew and marina residents.

World-class yachting facilities and services

Besides the al-fresco bars and high-end boutiques, the marina has been built with all the facilities that yachts need for out-of-season maintenance, including state-of-the-art amenities such as a vast 10,000 square metre boatyard, complete with storage services for both tenders and equipment. Visiting yachts can also make use of two large floating dry-dock facilities for refit, located within one nautical mile of the marina. These facilities are coupled with professional services including around-the-clock concierge and security and fast and reliable fibre-optic and WiFi connectivity.

Along with Limassol Marina’s dedicated team of friendly, experienced professionals who work year-round to provide service and support, you’ll also find that big-name international brands like Caterpillar, MTU and MAN are represented by top-tier local service agents. This network of shore-based yachting services is ever-growing with the increasing presence of various superyacht management companies in the marina also.

A busy program of activities

You’ll find plenty of opportunities for the crew to relax and unwind after a busy season; the marina hosts an array of events from relaxed barbeques, live music, happy hours and sunset parties to fun and educational activities like mixology workshops, football tournaments, wine tasting tours to the island’s wineries and even guided hikes into the stunning Troodos Mountains, which is the largest mountain range in Cyprus.

Many of the proposed activities tie in with the marina’s environmental and conservation commitments, which goes by the name of “Going Green Together”. Traditional beach clean-ups have been given a twist with the popular “Clean up the sea with your SUP” days where a morning spent stand-up paddleboarding along the coast to collect waste is rewarded with drinks and snacks in the marina’s Gazebo Mare Beach Bar.

Crew or not, keen sailors will want to note the Limassol Marina Yacht Club Regatta – which happens in the Autumn – in their diaries, as well as the Cyprus International Sailing Club’s winter match racing series – hosted at the marina.

Autumn marks the return of the Limassol Boat Show which broke all records on its return this year after the pandemic hiatus and took place in mid-October. The largest event of its kind in the region, the show combines in-water displays,  various exhibition areas, a schedule of conferences, hospitality areas and private events, supercar displays and fashion shows.

There’s also plenty of festive cheer for Christmas on the Sea in celebration of the Christmas lights being switched on in the marina village.

An award-winning marina

The accolades for this award-winning complex keep rolling in. Limassol Marina is a ‘Blue Flag Marina’ since 2016. It is also one of the first in Europe with International Clean Marina Accreditation and was the fifth marina in the world to be awarded the Global Marinas Institute’s 5 Gold Anchor Platinum award in recognition of its customer services and facilities.
