Grand Ocean reborn: Inside the €25M rebuild of an 85m icon

28 January 2026 • Written by Hannah Rankine for Mira Yachts

When Grand Ocean was first delivered by Blohm & Voss in 1990, then known as Golden Odyssey II, she was never intended to be an ordinary private yacht. Built to a specification that went far beyond the conventions of the time, the 80-metre superyacht was conceived for a royal principal, with privacy, security and scale embedded into her DNA from the outset. More than three decades later, that legacy is being preserved and redefined as Grand Ocean nears completion following a comprehensive €25 million rebuild and prepares for relaunch in 2026.

A superyacht conceived beyond convention

From her inception, Grand Ocean was designed to operate on a different plane than most private yachts of her era. “The boat has a big legacy from the previous owner, with many custom features,” explains Johnny Tasoulis, managing director of Mira Yachts, which is overseeing the rebuild under full project management

Delivering a rebuild of this magnitude demands far more than coordination - it requires leadership, discipline and deep technical competence across every layer of the project. Mira Yachts has been the driving force behind Grand Ocean’s transformation, acting as the central point of control for planning, procurement, contractor management, budgeting, quality assurance and class compliance. From steel and aluminium works to major systems integration and interior execution, Mira Yachts has ensured that the yacht is rebuilt to modern superyacht standards with a clear focus on reliability, finish and long-term value.

Built under highly customised specifications, the yacht’s original layout prioritised discretion and security, with generous spatial allowances suited to ceremonial and private use at the highest level. Exterior architecture by Platou Architects and interiors by Alberto Pinto placed Grand Ocean firmly ahead of her time, both technically and aesthetically.

Among her most memorable features was a coral reef aquarium integrated into the main dining area, visually connected to the adjacent swimming pool via transparent panels. From inside the yacht, guests could see the pool’s mosaic finish shimmering through the glass.

A full rebuild for a new generation

More than 30 years after her launch, Grand Ocean is undergoing a complete transformation to Lloyd’s class in a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. The rebuild has aimed to elevate every aspect of the yacht to modern superyacht standards while preserving the yacht’s identity.

One of the most significant structural changes is a 5.5-metre aft extension, increasing the yacht’s overall length to 85 metres. Designed by Italian designer Christian Grande, the extension delivers substantial new deck space and improves circulation throughout the vessel without disrupting her original lines. All existing decks have been expanded, and for the first time in her history, Grand Ocean gains a true sundeck. “This is now a huge 280-square-metre area that could be used for entertainment or events or even a basketball court,” says Tasoulis. The addition fundamentally changes how the yacht can be used, particularly for owners who prioritise large-scale outdoor living and socialising.

Exterior spaces across the yacht have been comprehensively rethought. The swimming pool has been repositioned on the bridge deck aft to optimise sun exposure, while exterior social zones have been enlarged and refined to suit contemporary lifestyles. Al fresco dining now takes centre stage on the bridge deck aft, supported by a variety of relaxation and entertainment areas distributed throughout the exterior decks. A touch-and-go helipad has also been incorporated on the sundeck.

A new interior vision by Alberto Pinto

Inside, Grand Ocean reveals a dramatically updated interior with an internal volume of 2,050GT. Pinto has returned to reinterpret his original vision, working alongside other local designers to create fully bespoke interiors that feel contemporary and calm. The design language leans towards neutral palettes, providing a blank canvas for a future owner to personalise.

Grand Ocean has always benefited from a highly functional and well-balanced layout, designed with discretion, comfort and generous volumes in mind. This strong foundation has now been further enhanced through a refined interior reconfiguration, with the yacht now offering 13 guest cabins, in addition to a dedicated owner’s master cabin on her private owner’s deck, delivering an exceptional level of privacy, exclusivity and elevated onboard living.

“The boat previously had two master cabins on the main deck,” explains Tasoulis. “But you enter the boat on the bridge deck, so we felt it would be better to introduce a dedicated owner’s deck, creating a more exclusive and private experience for the owner.”

Formerly technical areas have also been reimagined for lifestyle use, including a beauty salon on the main deck and a formal indoor dining area paired with a wine cellar. On the bridge deck, there is a vast saloon with a grand piano for intimate evenings indoors.

Grand Ocean offers the benefits of a new build without the extended wait times currently defining the market - with the confidence that the rebuild has been executed under the direct supervision and proven delivery capability of Mira Yachts, ensuring the yacht is not only visually transformed, but technically ready for real-world operation at the highest level.

Now back in the water with sea trials scheduled for the “end of the second quarter of the season”, Grand Ocean is listed for sale with Konstantinos Ladas of Capital Yachting and represents an opportunity to acquire what is, in effect, a brand-new superyacht with a very short delivery timeline.
