Mangusta Oceano 39 review: The entry-level yacht that feels anything but

When the Mangusta Oceano 39 was introduced in 2021, it marked a new chapter for the Italian builder Overmarine Group. Designed as the entry point into the yard’s long-range displacement series, the 39.2-metre yacht may be the smallest in the Oceano range, but it carries the same design philosophy that defines its larger siblings.

Built in composite at Overmarine’s Viareggio shipyard, the Mangusta Oceano 39 forms part of a growing family that also includes the Oceano 44, 46, 50, 52 and 60 models. Since its introduction, the model has steadily gathered momentum: seven units have been sold so far, with four currently under construction and the fifth hull recently launched.

A design built around openness

The Mangusta Oceano line is defined by its relationship with the surrounding environment, and the Oceano 39 expresses this philosophy in its most distilled form. Designed by the Overmarine Group in collaboration with Italian designer Alberto Mancini, the yacht’s exterior profile prioritises glass, open sightlines and fluid transitions between decks.

“The Mangusta Oceano 39 is a yacht that embodies an innovative way of experiencing onboard life, forging a brand-new concept of open spaces and direct contact with the sea thanks to a minimal superstructure and the most extensive use of glass,” says Stefano Arlunno, president of Mangusta Americas. “Freedom of movement and a constant interaction between all decks are ensured by the aft area, which is a natural extension of the yacht overlooking the sea.”

The extensive glazing and minimal superstructure allow the horizon to remain constantly in view, while floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, glass handrails and reduced bulwarks are also incorporated into the design.

“Minimised bulwarks and glass handrails allow the gaze to freely sweep the horizon, and the ceiling-high sliding glass doors mean that no breathtaking view will ever be missed,” Arlunno continues. “An imposing and powerful bow protects the glass wheelhouse and the infinity pool, whose partially see-through bottom lets natural light flood the owner's stateroom.”

The result is a yacht that feels remarkably open for its size, with the surrounding seascape always part of the experience.

A waterfront terrace at sea

Nowhere is this philosophy clearer than at the stern. Rather than simply extending the swim platform, the Mangusta Oceano 39 introduces a concept the yard describes as a true “beach house”.

Fold-down terraces expand the aft area into a broad waterfront terrace, leading into a flexible indoor-outdoor space that can serve as a gym, tender garage or lounge depending on the owner’s preferences. When fully opened, the area becomes a 180-degree connection with the water.

One of the Mangusta Oceano line’s signature features also appears on the 39: the forward infinity pool. Positioned on the upper deck, the pool features a partially transparent bottom that allows natural light to filter down into the owner’s stateroom below.

The sundeck offers another opportunity for customisation, with the option to install a second infinity pool for panoramic views across the water.

Flexible interiors shaped by the owner

Inside, the Mangusta Oceano 39 prioritises clean lines and a calm, contemporary aesthetic. Hidden lighting elements are integrated throughout the interior architecture, creating a soft and ambient atmosphere that shifts from day to evening.

The yacht’s internal volume remains below 299GT, an intentional decision that helps minimise regulatory requirements associated with higher tonnage vessels.

Two saloons — located on the main and upper decks — benefit from floor-to-ceiling windows that can be partially opened, reinforcing the indoor-outdoor connection that defines the yacht’s design.

The main deck functions as the yacht’s social centre, with a spacious saloon, formal dining area and multiple lounge spaces extending onto the aft deck. Above, the upper deck offers an al fresco dining area and a flexible interior space that can be configured as a cinema lounge, private retreat or even an additional owner’s suite.

Customisation remains central to the Mangusta philosophy. While the first hull launched in 2023 with a bright white hull and bold red boot stripe, the fifth hull features an all-grey exterior profile.

Guest accommodation on board is arranged for up to 12 guests across five en-suite cabins. The standard layout places the owner’s suite forward on the main deck, complete with a fold-down balcony on the starboard side that opens directly onto the sea. Four additional guest cabins — two doubles and two twins — are located on the lower deck, while separate quarters accommodate a crew of seven.

Performance and efficiency

Powering the fifth Mangusta Oceano 39 is a pair of 2,600hp MTU engines. The propulsion system allows owners to choose between two different performance profiles depending on configuration.

The displacement version offers a maximum speed of 15 knots, while the fast-displacement setup increases this to 18 knots. Despite the output, the yard describes the engines as remarkably quiet in operation.

A shallow 2.3-metre draught also allows the yacht to access cruising grounds that would be off-limits to deeper vessels.

For owners seeking a yacht that combines long-range capability with a contemporary approach to onboard living, the Mangusta Oceano 39 offers a compelling introduction to the range. For more information about the Mangusta Oceano 39 and the wider Oceano series, contact Overmarine Group.
