Werner brings more than 13 years of leadership experience to the role, with expertise in environmental science, policy and implementation. Trained as a biological oceanographer, her career has been centred on translating scientific concepts for non-technical audiences, decision-makers and industry stakeholders.

According to the Foundation, Werner's appointment will be intrinsic to identifying new opportunities for the programme's upscaling, ensuring that it continues to grow in both impact and reach.

Werner succeeds Robert van Tol, who co-founded the Foundation in late 2018 and has been at its helm since. The Foundation said: "We extend our deepest gratitude to Robert van Tol for his founding leadership and commitment to the foundation since its inception." Last month, van Tol was appointed as the new executive director of SYBAss, effective 1 January 2026.

Werner's appointment comes just five months after Aino Grapin was appointed as board chair of the Foundation.
