The 28.3-metre classic aluminium ketch Firebird has been listed for sale with Laura Verbrugge of Fraser.
Delivered by Palmer Johnson in 1968 and designed entirely in-house, Firebird was notably the largest aluminium sailing yacht in the world at the time of her launch and has since built an impressive reputation as a long-range cruiser, completing multiple circumnavigations and voyages to extreme latitudes.
The recent works included rebuilt main engines and generators, the installation of a new Victron electrical system, a full Awlgrip hull repaint and ongoing interior improvements. According to the brokerage, the refit was focused on ensuring reliability and ease of ownership while preserving the yacht's original character.
The 71GT ketch offers accommodation for up to nine guests across four cabins, including a full-beam master suite, a VIP cabin and additional guest accommodation. Interiors retain much of the yacht's classic character, with warm timber finishes and traditional detailing reflecting her late-1960s pedigree.
The main saloon serves as the social heart of the yacht, arranged with lounge seating and dining space, while a separate lounge area provides a more relaxed setting for guests. A generous galley supports extended cruising and life on board, complementing a layout designed for long-range passages rather than short coastal hops.
Outside, Firebird benefits from a protected centre cockpit that provides shelter while under sail, a key feature for the yacht's extensive bluewater cruising programme. Forward, guests will find a dedicated sunbathing area on deck, while the broad side decks and uncluttered deck layout offer easy movement around the yacht when underway.
The 71GT yacht has a beam of 5.5 metres and a draft of 4.1 metres. Powered by twin 320hp engines, she cruises at 10 knots and reaches a top speed of 12 knots. Fraser notes that Firebird offers an approximate cruising range of 3,500 nautical miles, making her well suited to owners seeking extended adventures under sail.
Broker Laura Verbrugge described the yacht for sale as "a standout pedigreed aluminium ketch with exceptional world-cruising history and a comprehensive recent refit", adding that her combination of proven seaworthiness and upgraded systems presents a rare opportunity in today's market.
Firebird is currently available for inspection in Phuket, Thailand, with an asking price of €1,395,000.
