Designer Alexander McDiarmid has unveiled a 130-metre explorer yacht concept crafted to support dual helicopter operations, ahead of its appearance at the Monaco Yacht Show 2026.
The GEx explorer yacht was conceived in response to an experienced owner's desire for dual helicopter operations on board a superyacht. Lateral Naval Architects, Ghost Yachts and Maritime Aviation provided expertise in yacht design, naval architecture, yacht construction, manufacturing and shipboard heliport design.
The result is an aviation-capable, Ice-Class Polar Explorer Yacht featuring a dual heliport concept above deck, developed by the designer and Maritime Aviation, with dual hangars below deck to fit four ACH145 Airbus Corporate Helicopters.
The exterior style exudes a strong, angular, naval-chic aesthetic, with the main superstructure appearing to float midships while encapsulating her owner and guests, with surfaces pulled taut across the entire structure.
The yacht's dual aviation capability provides safety in inhospitable environments, while the silo-like hangars create an eye-catching spectacle at anchor.
Automated guardrails around the main aft deck collapse horizontally during all helicopter operations to reduce the risk of dynamic rollover. Each hangar features an aircraft lift, allowing the owner and guests to board the helicopters from each hangar below deck via the yacht's dedicated VIP Aviation Lounge.
The concept allows for the main rotor blades to remain attached to each aircraft, reducing overall preparation time. For longer voyages, the main rotor blades would be removed and stored to prevent any damage to the aircraft.
While on board, guests can enjoy the beach club and swimming pool, wellness and spa facilities, and a gym. A lecture theatre offers intellectual stimulation, while a cinema and games room provide much-needed entertainment for all ages. An infirmary is also available for added safety and comfort.
The main deck contains several observation lounges, while the top deck also provides a unique observation area, complete with a panoramic lounge.
Accommodation is for up to 13 guests across five double cabins and an owner's suite on the owner's deck, with an atrium lounge and private foredeck.
Up to 43 crew members are accommodated on board, including two pilots and engineers and four specialist polar expedition staff. Crew can also access a dedicated gym.
The GEx explorer yacht is powered by two electric Azipods DO1100P and can reach a top speed of 17 knots, with a cruising speed of 12-14 knots.
