Hydro Tec unveils new 55m explorer yacht concept Vagrant

Italian studio Hydro Tec has marked its 30th anniversary with the reveal of a new explorer yacht concept, Vagrant, at the Monaco Yacht Show’s Design & Innovation Hub.

The 55-metre design revisits the Italian studio’s pioneering "pocket explorer" philosophy, first seen in the Naumachos 82 launched nearly two decades ago. Where that model broke with convention by combining rugged autonomy with a compact footprint, Vagrant seeks to reinterpret the idea for a new generation of owners.

One of the concept’s defining features is a central "funnel", originally born from a technical requirement but now reimagined as both a structural and aesthetic statement. The vertical core supports lighter side structures, allowing the main deck saloon to be almost entirely glazed with wide sliding doors opening onto the seascape.

Other design cues blend heritage and futurism, from a gentleman-style helm station and symmetrical profile to 1970s-inspired details such as exposed engine air intakes. Inside, the yacht adopts an open-plan approach with flexible spaces that can be reconfigured to suit the owner’s lifestyle. The upper deck is envisioned as a multipurpose "social and wellness club", adaptable for use as a gym, dining area or lounge.

"Vagrant celebrates not only our thirty-year history, but also the enduring legacy of the pocket explorer," said Sergio Cutolo, founder and president of Hydro Tec. "From the Naumachos 82 to today, we have carried forward a vision that unites authenticity, innovation and freedom at sea."

The design remains at concept stage but underscores Hydro Tec’s continuing role in the evolution of the modern explorer yacht.
