Q&A with golf personality Trey Niven: Tips, tricks and what to expect at the Barcelona Golf Invitational 2026

30 April 2026 • Written by Hannah Rankine

The Barcelona Golf Invitational presented by BOAT and Voly returns for its third edition on 20-21 May 2026, and this year's event has confirmed a special guest who needs little introduction in the golfing world, Trey Niven.

Taking place at the world-renowned Stadium Course at Camiral A Quinta do Lago Resort just outside Barcelona, the two-day event welcomes yacht owners, captains and the wider yachting industry for a game of friendly golf and networking.

A PGA professional with a multifaceted career, Niven has built a strong reputation both within the sport and across the wider golf community. Alongside his work as a coach, he is a familiar face to television audiences as a Sky Sports pundit, regularly providing expert analysis on both the PGA and LPGA Tours. As an adidas global ambassador and prominent content creator, Niven has cultivated a wide following, and his impact on the game has earned him a place among Golf Monthly's Top 50 UK Coaches.

With Niven joining guests for challenges including Longest Drive and Nearest the Pin, we caught up with him ahead of the event to learn more about his journey in golf, his approach to the game and what attendees can expect when they tee off this May.

Who in the world of golf do you consider your idol or inspiration?

Rory McIlroy, due to his desire to be the best he can and prove doubters wrong.

You’ve worked across coaching, broadcasting and content creation – how has that shaped the way you approach the game today?

It has definitely allowed me to deliver complex things in a simple way, to be understood by a range of different people and to adapt in any given situation by thinking on the spot at times.

What’s your best advice for amateur golfers looking to improve their game?

It sounds simple, but having a clear understanding of what makes a ball fly - whether that be high, low or curvatures - and applying that to your own game so you know what happens when you do things good and bad.

What’s one common mistake you see amateurs make?

Overcomplicating the game and thinking too much on the golf course.

If someone only has time to practice one aspect of their game, what should it be?

Strike! If you can learn to strike the ball well, it leads to distance and accuracy - and also consistency of distance.

For those who struggle with consistency, what’s the key to building a reliable swing?

Being able to hit a single shot shape on repeat with all clubs!

As someone who creates golf content, how do you think social media has changed the game?

It’s enabled people to consume the game in a number of different ways, from educational content to entertaining content. It also introduces the game to people who wouldn’t have ordinarily picked it up.

What is your favourite piece of golfing history you've watched/witnessed?

In my lifetime, Rory McIlroy completing the career Grand Slam - and then being on site to watch him win his second Masters.

If you could change any rule in golf, what would it be and why?

Having to play from a divot in the middle of the fairway… or not being allowed to wear shorts in some pro events!

You’ll be joining guests for challenges like Longest Drive and Nearest the Pin – who do you think will feel the pressure more, you or them?!

100 per cent them!

Have you ever played on the Stadium Course? What kind of challenges does it present?

Yes - a couple of times now. Some of the green complexes are seriously challenging. Big fast greens with sweeping slopes and tiers. Let’s hope the head Greenkeeper is kind to us!

As an adidas ambassador, how important is equipment and apparel to performance?

For apparel, it’s definitely feeling yourself on and off the course. No matter what you decide to wear, it should feel like you can express yourself and your character.

Which courses around the world stand out to you as favourites?

I loved playing Ohoopee Match Club in Georgia this year - a really unique course and environment. Only match play is played, and there are little to no rules! There are no tee markers - whoever wins the hole decides where to play from.

What would be your one piece of advice for guests heading to the Barcelona Golf Invitational?

Rule number one: bring some game! Rule number two: enjoy yourself!

The Barcelona Golf Invitational takes place on 20-21 May 2026 at the Stadium Course, Camiral A Quinta do Lago Resort. A limited number of tickets are still available, with Individual, Team of Four and Social-Only options. Book now to avoid disappointment.
