This year, respected design studio Nuvolari Lenard is turning its attention to creating its own yacht series. Lucy Dunn looks at what sets it apart.
From the iconic 81-metre Alfa Nero to the mighty 122-metre Kismet, Nuvolari Lenard has been designing headline-worthy superyachts for over three decades. Known for their quintessential Italian style, co-founders Carlo Nuvolari and Dan Lenard credit their success to their passion for yachting as well as the fact that they both grew up on the coast and have a strong relationship with the sea. “That to me seems fundamental if you want to design or build yachts,” muses Nuvolari.
But style is not the only thing Nuvolari Lenard is known for: the Venetian design duo is also adept at understanding shipyards and second-guessing clients’ needs. They know that when it comes to the journey from concept to cruising, time is of the essence and that the owner shouldn’t have to wait too long for their treasured new possession.
Now, they have pooled their wealth of experience and are putting their name behind a much-anticipated new series: the NL 50 Plus, built in collaboration with the shipyard Mengi Yay and brokerage partner Camper & Nicholsons.
"The NL 50 Plus series is a testament to Nuvolari Lenard's dedication to innovation and luxury," says Benjamin Bensahel, Europe head of sales and brokerage at Camper & Nicholsons. "This project combines a stunning design with practical functionality, ensuring a seamless experience for future owners. This series sets a new standard in superyacht design, combining rapid delivery with full customisation options. Considering our extensive experience in new build sales and project management, we're thrilled to collaborate with such a visionary team to bring this exceptional series to life."
A "ready-to-design" yacht built for outdoor living
Sitting just below the 500GT regulatory limit at 499GT, this elegant 52-metre model ticks the boxes of what an owner is looking for now. Nuvolari Lenard understands that clients want something special, but don’t want to wait years for it, so to guarantee a faster delivery date, each vessel has completed a basic construction phase and is ready for the owners to put their own design stamp on it. With a highly efficient hull designed by Dutch naval architect Van Oossanen, the yacht is built on a solid platform and together this ensures low fuel consumption and low noise on board.
Designed for relaxation, the NL 50 Plus centres around outdoor living. She not only boasts one of the largest sundecks in her category, which comes with a custom heated spa pool and fire pit, but she also has a vast beach club area aft complete with a customisable integrated pool. Other highlights include a foredeck lounge, which doubles as an open-air cinema and storage space for a seven-metre tender and a variety of water toys.
Clever balconies and cavernous cabins
Accommodation includes a spacious 50-square-metre owner's suite that comes with a clever slide-out terrace and your very own private suntrap. It is fitted with a couple of modes meaning you can simply step out on it to enjoy the view, or fully extend it to stretch out on a sunlounger. Guest accommodation is across four spacious VIP cabins on the lower deck.
Made-to-measure interiors
The interiors are fully customisable, though the team has multiple décor options available for the prospective owner to view as a jumping-off point. A seamless flow between the interior and exterior is also a key element of the design.
“All the design is driven by us, as designers and as users ourselves,” Nuvolari concludes. “Where and how you spend your time on board the yacht must grant you comfort and pleasure. For us, good design is really important and that means harmony of form and function – meaning something that is not only aesthetically beautiful but is also functional in every detail. That is NL 50 Plus.”
The keel of the first NL 50 Plus yacht was laid at Mengi Yay this spring.
