The biggest yachting news stories of May 2024

From Below Deck Mediterranean's Captain Sandy Yawn tying the knot on board She's a 10 Too to Larry Connor announcing his plans to dive to the Titanic inside a Triton submarine, the news was particularly people-led this month. But a series of impressive launches and deliveries still secured Lürssen, Rossinavi and Feadship the top spots – including one of the first superyachts powered by fuel cells and one of the most expensive charter yachts in the world.

1. NASA astronaut on a mission to visit the Titanic wreck to "dispel fears" following Oceangate disaster

Submarine specialists Triton announced plans to build the world's deepest-diving acrylic submarine for Ohio-based real estate tycoon Larry Connor. In the summer of 2026, Connor intends to dive to the Titanic wreck to assuage some of the fears around deep sea diving in the wake of the Oceangate submersible disaster.

2. Lürssen's 122m superyacht Kismet delivered to billionaire sports tycoon

The 122-metre Lürssen superyacht Kismet was delivered to repeat Lürssen client Shahid Khan, who also owns the Fulham Football Club and the Jacksonville Jaguars. She charters for €3,000,000 per week plus expenses, making her one of the world's most expensive yachts for charter, and carries a long list of amenities including fireplaces and marble lobbies.

3. Adrian Newey switches out Formula 1 racing for a "slower pace of life" aboard his Oyster sailing yacht

In an exclusive interview with Oyster Yachts, Adrian Newey OBE revealed his plans to focus on "a slower pace of life" aboard his Oyster 885. This followed his retirement as chief technical officer of Formula 1's Red Bull Racing team.

"I feel a bit tired at the moment. [But] to walk away from [Red Bull Racing] was a very hard decision," Newey said. "Do I go again or do I enjoy my Oyster yacht and sail off into the sunset?”

4. Below Deck Mediterranean's Captain Sandy Yawn married on board superyacht She's a 10 Too

Bravo reality star Captain Sandy Yawn tied the knot with Leah Shafer on board the 54-metre Mangusta GranSport She's a 10 Too in Florida. The wedding was officiated by Nadine Rajabi, executive producer of Below Deck Mediterranean and Below Deck Down Under. The couple first met on Facebook in 2018 and announced their engagement in September 2023.

5. Legendary 36m J Class sailing yacht Shamrock V relaunched

The 1930s America's Cup challenger Shamrock V was relaunched in Southampton following a substantial rebuild after seven years of disuse. Measuring 36.4 metres, she is the only wooden J Class in the world and sustained significant structural damage while racing at the America's Cup in 2017.

6. Rossinavi launches first 43m hybrid-electric catamaran Seawolf X

Rossinavi launched its most innovative project to date, a 42.8-metre hybrid-electric catamaran named Seawolf X. The superyacht can cruise in electric mode for 80 per cent of a transatlantic trip and supply enough energy to charge up an entire villa – while only needing five hours to recharge, according to the shipyard.

7. Feadship announces landmark launch of fuel-cell powered 119m superyacht Project 821

Feadship marked a milestone moment in the yachting industry with the launch of the first fuel-cell-powered superyacht. She also marks the largest motor yacht ever launched in the Netherlands, eclipsing the recently-launched Launchpad with around "30 per cent more volume". The yacht's list of features is vast, with a semi-submerged Neptune lounge, cinema, library and hospital facility. She is listed as a yacht for sale with Edmiston.

8. Fire tears through marina in Medulin, Croatia and destroys 22 boats

A fire tore through a marina in Medulin, northwestern Croatia and destroyed approximately 22 boats. Local reports claim that several owners jumped into the sea to escape as firefighters attempted to separate the boats that were still unaffected.

9. First interior renderings of largest Dutch-built motor yacht revealed

The first interior renderings of Amels' 120-metre project, now known as Project Tanzanite, were revealed this month. The yacht is currently the largest project in build in the Netherlands, and will become the largest Dutch-built motor yacht in the world once delivered in 2025.

10. One injured as 25m Sunseeker Atlantis sinks off coast of Florida

In another unfortunate incident, the 24.8-metre Sunseeker yacht Atlantis sunk two miles off the coast of Florida following a collision with a dredge pipe piling. Dramatic imagery taken by rescue services shows the superyacht taking on more water until she began to founder.
