Co-founder of American yachtbuilder Delta Marine dies

29 July 2025 • Written by Dea Jusufi

American yard Delta Marine has announced the passing of its co-founder, Ivor Jones.

Driven by an early passion for boat racing, Jones founded Delta Marine alongside his brother Jack in 1967. The family-run, Seattle-based company began by building fishing boats that could handle the infamously rough waters of the Pacific Northwest.

An unprecedented level of success (delivering more than 600 commercial vessels in its early years) led to the yard's expansion into luxury expedition yachts capable of carrying its owners north to Alaska, west to the Pacific islands and ultimately, around the world.

By the 1990s, Delta Marine was exclusively building custom superyachts - and had become one of the most prestigious American yards in the world, responsible for four of the world's largest US-built yachts. Notable builds include its flagship yacht Moonstone, which recently underwent a refit at Damen Yachting and the 73.2-metre Laurel, one of the world's most expensive superyachts for sale.

The yard, which is still family-owned and operated to this day, sits on 25 acres along the Duwamish River in Seattle, with over 300,000 square feet of manufacturing space. Two projects are currently in the works – the 47.6-metre Project Ammo and the 44.2-metre Project Zembra.

"Ivor led with heart, grit, and a deep sense of responsibility to his craft, his team and his family," said Delta Marine vice president and Ivor's daughter, Michelle Jones. "The culture he created is rooted in integrity, care, and relentless dedication. We are committed to honouring that legacy in everything we do."

Ivor will be remembered with great respect, deep gratitude and lasting admiration.
