First 24m hybrid Y8 yacht from YYachts enters construction

German shipyard YYachts has announced that the first unit from its 24-metre hybrid Y8 series is now in build.

The new build is the first from the series to be equipped with an advanced hybrid propulsion system from Yanmar, which combines conventional diesel propulsion with an electric drive. As a result, the system allows owners to choose modes for any situation.

In electric “silent mode” the hybrid Y8 operates on a lithium battery and is expected to offer near-silent cruising with zero local emissions, free from vibration, noise and exhaust fumes. Alongside a hybrid propulsion, the yacht will feature flexible charging options: charged either via shore power when in port or through onboard solar energy.

The diesel engine is also capable of running on HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil)– a renewable fuel that can significantly lower CO2 emissions – and features a modern touch display for easy use, intuitive control and real-time monitoring of propulsion, energy flow and battery status.

According to YYachts, the Y8 has been conceived for owners seeking long-range capability, generous space and "understated elegance", with lean exterior lines and a bright, light-filled interior characterising the model. Surge Projects by Janvier Jaudenes is responsible for the design and naval architecture, while interior design is from David Thulstrup and the YYachts in-house design team. Key specs include a 6.6-metre beam and a 4.3-metre draught (fixed keel).

A statement from the yard read: "With this hybrid-powered Y8, YYachts demonstrates that sustainability and luxury are not opposing concepts but natural partners. Advanced technology, responsible energy use and timeless design come together in a yacht that is as future-oriented as it is elegant."

The yard celebrated the delivery of the fourth unit in its flagship Y9 sailing yacht series, the teal-hulled Ephemere, last year.
