MASK Architects reveals 31m sailing yacht concept with "exhilarating speeds"

Italian studio MASK Architects has released a 30.5-metre sailing yacht concept called Project Tavolara. The fast-cruising sloop is designed in equal parts for "exceptional comfort" and "exhilarating speed", with the foundation of its projected performance (18 knots) lying in its advanced hull platform.

The yacht would be built using a carbon-fibre composite sandwich construction, incorporating either a foam or balsa core. Similar solutions can be found on Wally's Y3K sailer and the 53.9-metre Ravenger by Baltic Yachts, with this construction method crucial for achieving maximum structural rigidity while maintaining an ultra-lightweight profile.

Rigging will be equally advanced, comprised of a high modulus carbon mast and "state-of-the-art" 3Di sails by North Sails.

Exterior design is clean and pared-back, with simple, gentle curved lines and natural teak finishes. Living spaces will be similarly styled, incorporating lightweight composite panels, honeycomb-structured materials and lightened fine woods for weight management. The carbon-fibre theme will also be continued in Project Tavolara's "aesthetic detailing" for a contemporary, high-tech interior atmosphere.

On the technical side, Project Tavolara has been tailored with owner autonomy in mind. Electric or hydraulic winches will allow for semi-automated sail handling, complemented by integrated home automation such as remote control lighting, climate systems and electronics.

The yacht would be powered by a "cutting-edge" hybrid system that gathers kinetic energy while under sail

"Our vision is to create a harmonious blend of cutting-edge technology, aerodynamic efficiency and sophisticated elegance," explained the studio. "We are channeling our expertise into every detail, ensuring Project Tavolara will not only be a triumph of engineering but also a floating masterpiece that redefines the sailing experience."

The Italian studio made waves earlier this week with an update on its hydrogen-powered superyacht design, developed under the codename ONYX H2-B0 85.
