The 30-metre Sanlorenzo yacht John has partially sunk following extensive damage from a fire at the Marina di Brindisi, Italy, on the morning of Saturday 3 October.
According to local news outlet Brindisi Report, the fire broke out at 9.00am, with firefighters from the Brindisi provincial command attending the scene. Eyewitnesses describe seeing a water jet attempting to extinguish the unruly flames.
Once the fire was under control, the vessel was moved to the nearby Punta Riso breakwater by two tugboats from the Fratelli Barretta company, Asmara and Marietta Barretta, which continued to extinguish the flames. Images from onlookers now reveal the yacht to have partially sunk next to the breakwater, with only the damaged bow visible above the water.
The Port Authority is currently investigating the cause of the fire. The ARPA Brindisi, the Regional Agency for the Prevention and Protection of the Environment in the Puglia region, measured air quality, which showed no abnormalities, and took water samples to test for hydrocarbon leaks. The results are due to be released in the coming days. No injuries have been reported.
John was delivered in 1998 as one of 20 SL100 yachts from the shipyard, with exteriors from the drawing boards of Francesco Paszkowski and interiors from Lisa Vanderpump. Accommodation was for up to eight guests in addition to a crew of five.
BOAT International will continue to follow the story as it develops.
