Symbiosis: Kurt Merki Jr reveals 80m superyacht concept defined by nature

Swiss studio Kurt Merki Jr has revealed renderings of an 80 metre superyacht concept with a design that focuses on nature.

Named Symbiosis, the biophilic concept is packed with greenery including a ‘tree of life’ located on the exterior aft of the main deck. Stretching over two decks, this large tree can be selected from a variety of different options to suit the owner’s needs and climatic regions.

Designer Kurt Merki Jr collaborated on the project with Axel Massmann, founder of green interior specialist company yacht-green, and Glenn Dalby, who has captained Lürssen’s 126 metre Octopus.

Elsewhere, the concept boasts a lawn of over 100 square metres that can be used as a playground, picnic space or a workout area. Automated irrigation systems help maintain the grass, with a trained gardener on hand to keep the space in good condition.

Symbiosis also boasts an area called ‘The Sanctum’ which according to Merki Jr is “the holy green grail of the boat”. Here, special herbs, spices and vegetables can be cultivated and harvested for the yacht’s onboard chefs to use in gourmet meals. “We integrate automated watering and fertilising systems,” said Massmann. “All suggested ideas are certainly realistic.”

Speaking on the design, Captain Glenn Dalby said: “Symbiosis has genuinely pioneering features and raises the bar further in the quest for the perfectly idyllic onboard environments at sea”.

Merki Jr added that the concept is "meant to be a revolution in special green features in yacht design."
