Young Designer of the Year Award 2019 Winner Shares First Industry Vlog
The winner of the Young Designer Award 2019 Yihharn Liu has revealed she is working on some “exciting new projects” in the first episode of her ongoing vlog series.
Liu, who won the 2019 competition with her 80 metre motor sailer design concept Manta, reflected on life since winning the award, which is sponsored by Dutch superyacht yard Oceanco.
In April, Liu attended BOAT’s Young Designer Getaway in The Netherlands, which she described as a "wonderful experience",
Accompanied by fellow finalists from the 2019 competition, Liu pitched her concept to in-house designers at Oceanco and received “great feedback”.
Reflecting on the visit to Oceanco, Liu said: “The best bit for me was when we went to see two under construction superyachts which were both over 100m to look how complicated the engineering is.” She previously described the weekend as “a wonderful experience”.
Speaking at the event, Oceanco group marketing manager Paris Baloumis said: “We don’t only sponsor the event, we actively engage with the young designers. We invited them here to see their designs again, to challenge them and to connect their creativity with our internal experts and our naval architects.”
Following the getaway, in May, Liu attended the World Superyacht Awards in London. Talking about the event, she said: "It was such an honour to be there to celebrate with them and see loads of phenomenal yachts receiving their awards."
Reflecting on the experience, Liu said the award has “opened the door to the yachting industry”. She added: “I have had more opportunity to visit shipyards, get to know other people in the industry and get advice from yacht masters.”
Liu’s next vlog will be filmed at the Monaco Yacht Show 2019, where she will be attending the Young Designer’s Creative Breakfast. Following the yacht show, Liu will begin her three-month internship at Oceanco in the Netherlands.
