Few and far between are the superyacht owners whose passion for the finer things in life doesn’t extend to a collection of fine mechanical timepieces. And, while almost every watchmaker offers a range of diving watches and sailing models to satisfy nautical watch needs, this season Ulysse Nardin is taking things one step further with a new special edition watch dedicated to superyachts and their owners.
The new Marine Mega Yacht is the latest addition to the Marine Grand Deck Tourbillon range which was introduced in 2016 as a collection of high complication timepieces inspired by all things aquatic. While previous pieces in the range have taken their cues from classic sailing yachts and ocean liners, this edition takes its aesthetics directly from the modern, luxurious vessels which currently rules the waves.
Unveiled at the Miami Yacht Show, the Marine Mega Yacht will be available as a limited edition of 30 pieces with a 3D grand feu enamel dial inspired by the shape of a yacht’s bow as it cruises through the waves. The watch is powered by a calibre UN-631 movement with a flying tourbillon complication in the form of a propeller located at 6 o’clock. Other nautically-inspired complications include a power reserve indicated by a dropping anchor attached to a windlass at 12 o’clock and a three-dimensional moonphase displayed by an incredibly detailed rotating miniature moon. A tidal coefficient and volume indicator has also been included as a practical function to help captains optimise their choice of anchorage.
The Marine Mega Yacht is priced at $310,000 and features a 44mm platinum case with water resistance to 50 metres and a navy alligator leather strap.
