Pym Island, Canada

British Columbia’s Gulf Islands are known as a hippy haven. American draft evaders settled in the area during the Vietnam War and the archipelago, which separates Vancouver Island from the mainland, still appeals to a bohemian crowd. However, the area is also a boater’s paradise and two-hectare Pym Island is no exception.

With more than 800 metres of ocean frontage the forested island – dotted with Garry oak, fir, cedar and arbutus – offers spectacular views of Mount Baker and the Olympic Mountain range. It already has a boathouse, jetty, deep-water moorage and two boats (a water taxi and a speedboat) which are included in the sale.

Built in 1985, the main house has vaulted ceilings, marble flooring and grand stone fireplaces. The four-bedroom property utilises natural materials throughout, including cedar and oak, and has an indoor pool with a hot tub. There are a further five individual rustic cottages spread across the island which are connected by lamp-lit coastal paths (wide enough for golf carts).

Despite the island’s remote feel it is only 10 minutes by boat to Vancouver Island’s Canoe Cove Marina and about 50 nautical miles to

Vancouver Harbour. The island has full electrical connection to the BC Hydro grid but it can also be self-sufficient as it has a diesel generator, two massive freshwater holding tanks and several outbuildings for vehicles and firewood.

Pym Island is listed for sale with Sotheby's International Realty for CAD$6.8 million.
