Espinosa Yacht Design

History

Superyacht designer JC Espinosa – or Juan Carlos Espinosa to give him his full name – graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1985 with a degree in Architecture and Urban Planning. It was while working for a Chicago architectural firm, in 1985, that Espinosa was first introduced to yacht design, when the firm was commissioned to the design what would be the largest aluminium megayacht built in the US at the time.

He founded Espinosa Inc in 1990, and his first commission was the design of Jim Moran’s 39.6 metre Feadship Gallant Lady. Since then, the Espinosa team have worked on several well known and award-winning megayacht interior and exterior designs. The studio is currently based in Florida.

Notable yachts

Aside from Gallant Lady, Espinosa superyachts include the 44.5 metre Delta Gran Finale and 47 metre Delta Mr Terrible, along with the Horizon 41.5 metre Angora and 36.6 metre Muses, both of which were finalists at the World Superyacht Awards 2012. JC Espinosa also designed the interior of Trinity’s 50 metre 2012 launch Tsumat.

Specialisations

Espinosa has developed a series of long-standing collaborations with production and custom megayacht builders including Taiwan’s Horizon, and Delta in the US. Espinosa Inc works not only in yacht design, but also draws on JC Espinosa’s architecture background to cover sustainable architecture and residential interior design. The studio also undertakes custom furniture design.
